WILLIAMSPORT ART TEACHER JAILED ON CHARGES INVOLVING FIVE STUDENTS A Williamsport Area High School art teacher is jailed without bail on charges involving five female students between the ages of 14 and 17. According to the Sun Gazette, police allege 47-year-old Joshua Larson had inappropriate physical contact with the students, gave them gifts and invited them to spend time with him outside school. Larson faces numerous felony charges, including institutional sexual assault, unlawful contact with minors and endangering children.
JERSEY SHORE MAN JAILED AFTER DUI CRASHES AND UTILITY POLE DAMAGE
A Jersey Shore man faces multiple charges after police say he drove drunk, fled two crash scenes and caused extensive damage. Nicholas Richart allegedly struck several vehicles, snapped a utility pole and brought live power lines down onto a tractor-trailer before running toward the Rail Trail. State police later helped take him into custody. Officers say Richart was driving with a suspended license, suspended registration and no valid insurance. Richart was jailed in Clinton County because he was already on probation.
WILLIAMSPORT FORMS TASK FORCE TO IMPROVE STREET SAFETY
Williamsport has formed a Safe Streets Task Force to help develop a citywide road safety plan. The group includes city officials, police, fire, transportation agencies, colleges and community organizations. A 356-thousand-dollar federal grant will fund the planning process. According to the Sun Gazette, officials say the goal is to identify smaller projects that can quickly improve safety for drivers, pedestrians, bicyclists and transit users. Public input will also help shape the final recommendations.

ALLENWOOD ATTORNEY PREPARES FOR TRIAL IN CLIENT EXPLOITATION CASE
An Allenwood attorney accused of sexually exploiting two vulnerable clients is preparing for trial after agreeing to a three-year suspension from practicing law. Fifty-one-year-old Timothy Reitz admitted to sexual conduct and inappropriate messages involving clients he represented in Lycoming and Tioga counties. He faces two misdemeanor counts of official oppression. A pretrial conference is scheduled for September 21, with jury selection set for November 19.
WATERVILLE MAN JAILED IN CORN STAND BURGLARY CASE
A Waterville man already accused in a Pine Creek Rail Trail shooting case is now jailed on burglary and theft charges. Lycoming Regional Police say 69-year-old David Helminiak was captured on camera stealing money and corn from a roadside stand along Route 44 near Jersey Shore. Police say he admitted to the trespassing and thefts. Helminiak was jailed on 35-thousand-dollars bail, with a preliminary hearing set for August 12.
PENNSYLVANIA GRANTS TO HELP HIGH SCHOOLS ADOPT LATER START TIMES
Pennsylvania high schools can now get grant money to help transition to later start times for students. A provision in the latest state budget makes funding available for districts trying to shift classes to better line up with the natural sleep patterns of teens. A new state law recommends that high schools avoid start times earlier than 8:30 a.m. Researchers say teens tend to stay up later than young children or adults due to delayed sleep hormone release.
NINE MILES FOR NINE LIVES CHALLENGE RETURNS IN AUGUST
Cherished Cats Rescue Alliance is bringing back its Nine Miles for Nine Lives Fitness Challenge throughout August. Participants can walk, run, bike, swim or crawl a total of nine miles, either all at once or over the course of the month.
