CATTLE TRUCK ACCIDENT SHUTS DOWN 11/15 IN SNYDER COUNTY
It was a cattle trailer crash near the Route 11/15 split in Snyder County yesterday that shut down the northbound lanes of the roadway. According to the Daily Item, about 25 of the 106 young cows died when the truck plunged down a 20-foot embankment. The surviving calves were pulled to safety thanks to a massive rescue effort. Firefighters from Shamokin Dam, Hummels Wharf, Sunbury, Point Township, Northumberland, Winfield, and Kratzerville worked for over an hour to lift the animals up the embankment. The rescued calves were reloaded and transported to Maryland. All lanes in Monroe Township are now open.
LOCAL SCHOOL JOINS CLASS ACTION SUIT AGAINST SOCIAL MEDIA
Midd-West School District is joining more than a thousand others nationwide in a class-action lawsuit against major social media companies. According to the Daily Item, the school board voted unanimously Monday to hire Marc J. Bern & Partners to represent the district, with attorneys to be paid only if a settlement is reached. Superintendent Joe Stroup says platforms like Facebook, TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube are designed to keep kids online, fueling anxiety, bullying, and other mental health problems. Midd-West spends more than $250,000 a year on student mental health services, costs officials hope a settlement could help offset.
PREOPRTY REASSESSMENT MEETING TONIGHT
Tyler Technologies, which is leading Lycoming County’s property reassessment, will host a public meeting tonight from 6 to 7 at the Muncy High School Auditorium, 200 West Penn Street. According to the Sun Gazette, residents are urged to bring questions and concerns about the process, which began last fall and continues through March. Attendees are asked to enter through Door 22. The reassessment aims to update property values countywide.
GROUND BREAKING CEREMONY IN SHAMOKIN FOR THE LEGION REPAIRS
A groundbreaking ceremony is set for 11 a.m. Friday at the American Legion building on East Independence Street in Shamokin. The event marks the start of federally funded repairs to the structure, which developed a major crack in 2022. The city secured the money through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development with support from Senators Bob Casey and John Fetterman. H&P Construction will reinforce the façade and install wired smoke detectors, with work expected to wrap up next summer. The building also houses the Shamokin-Coal Township Public Library and several community groups.
POLICE FIND DRUGS WHILE SEARCHING FOR SHOOTING SUSPECT
Williamsport police found six baggies of marijuana during a gun-related disturbance investigation on September 1st. According to North Central PA dot com, officers stopped 20-year-old Treyshawn Logan who was on a bicycle at McMinn Avenue and West Fourth Street. Logan denied having a weapon, but a search of his cross-body bag revealed marijuana packaged for distribution. He’s charged with intent to deliver. Bail was set at $45,000. Logan previously pleaded guilty to illegal firearm possession in 2024.
SUNBURY COUPLE TO SUE SHAMOKIN POLICE AND THE CITY AGAIN
A Sunbury woman who spent months jailed in her infant daughter’s 2023 death is suing Shamokin police and the city again. According to the News Item, Krystal Lee Semerod and the child’s father, Benjamin Gray, say officers falsely arrested and imprisoned them, defamed them, and violated their rights. The new federal complaint seeks more than $75,000 per claim from Police Chief Raymond Siko II, three officers, and the city. Prosecutors dropped all charges earlier this year, clearing the couple. Their daughter, 7-month-old Zoey Semerod, died after suffering a brain injury in 2023.
RULES OF DECORUM ANNOUNCED FOR PUBLIC MEETINGS
The Lycoming-Clinton Joinder Board has adopted new rules of decorum to maintain order during public meetings. According to the Sun Gazette, the resolution sets guidelines for comment periods, requiring remarks to relate to legitimate Joinder business and to be delivered respectfully, without personal attacks on staff or board members. Chair Jeffrey Snyder said the move comes after repeated comments targeting employees, stressing the board welcomes public input but won’t tolerate harassment. The new rules give the chair authority to remove disruptive individuals, with law enforcement available if necessary. The full list will be posted online and in meeting rooms.
FLOOD EXERCISE TODAY IN SUNBURY
A flood exercise today will bring road closures and detours in Sunbury and Upper Augusta Township. From 9 to 11 a.m., East Market Street, Route 61, will be shut down between Eleventh Street and Highland Avenue, with detours posted. During the same hours, part of South Tenth Street will also be closed for flood wall checks. Then from 10 a.m. to noon, the northbound lane of Shikellamy Avenue will be closed between the bridge and railroad tracks. Drivers are urged to avoid the area, follow detours, and expect delays.
