DRIVERS CAUTIONED DURING TODAY’S WINTER WEATHER
PennDOT is discouraged travel this morning along some area interstates and highways. According to the Department, the entire length of I-99, and I-180, along with I-80 from Lamar to I-81 was put under a tier 3 vehicle restriction due to the freezing rain mixed with sleet and snow in some areas. PennDOT is also advising that commercial trucks and large trucks avoid Route 44 between Route 554 in Elimsport and Route 654 in Limestone Township, just south of Jersey Shore Borough, between now and 10am. Interstate 180 and Route 220 is the alternate route for large and commercial trucks.
CHASE SUSPECT ARRESTED, RECOMMITTED TO JAIL
A 20 year old man from Fairfield Township who was out on intense supervised bail for previous arrests is facing more charges after authorities say he is the suspect who led a high speed chase with Williamsport city police January 24th on West Fourth Street through the Newberry neighborhood. According to the Sun Gazette, Mandon Watts, who was jailed after being arrested from the chase, was arraigned January 25th for felony flight to avoid apprehension, plus DUI. He was recommitted to jail in liue of 125 thousand dollars bail.
LOCAL TEACHER FACES WIRETAPPING CHARGES
Charges have been filed against a Mifflinburg Area School District teacher who allegedly recorded a meeting on January 22nd without obtaining consent from those present. According to the Standard Journal, 41 year old Andrea Hockenbury of Winfield admitted to recording a meeting with Superintendent Dr. Ken Dady, Principal Daryl Hunsberger, and a union representative at the district’s administrative offices for her own personal reference. Hockenbury is facing two felony wiretapping charges which were filed by Mifflinburg police. She is now free on $5,000 unsecured bail, with a preliminary hearing set for February 18th.
ART SHOW AT LYCOMING COLLEGE
The first show at the Lycoming College Art Gallery in 2025 is in February to honor the retiring president Kent Trachte (trock-tee) and his wife Sharon who have supported and inspired alumni artists whose works are featured in the exhibit. The installation starts February 14th and remains open through March 21st with a special artist talk scheduled for February 21st . POLICE SEEK SUSPECTS WHO KICKED IN WINDSHIELD
State police in Milton are looking for three suspects who kicked in the car windshield of a victim in the Walmart parking lot in Lewisburg. According to North Central PA dot com, troopers were contacted after a victim reported the vandalism on January 24th. Witnesses say three black men kicked in the windshield of a 2005 Chevrolet Suburban at about 10pm and then left the area in a light blue sedan. BANK THIEF PLEADS GUILTY TO IDENTITY THEFT
A man from New York City was sentenced this week after his guilty plea to bank fraud and aggravated identity theft committed at banks across north central PA. According to the Sun Gazette, court records say Jose A. Rodriguez will serve 32 months in federal prison, and pay 42 thousand dollars in restitution for using false identification documents to withdraw and attempt to withdraw funds from customer accounts at Woodlands Bank, C&N Bank and First National Bank in Lycoming, Tioga and Centre Counties between December 15th and 18th, 2023.
FCFP OFFERING SCHOLARSHIPS FOR HS STUDENTS
Over 90 scholarships are available for the 2025-26 academic year through the First Community Foundation Partnership of Pennsylvania. According to FCFP, the scholarships are open to high school and non-traditional students pursuing higher education and range from 2 hundred to 20 thousand dollars. High school students and non-traditional students residing in Lycoming, Clinton, Sullivan, Tioga, Union and surrounding counties are encouraged to apply.
BIF BROTHERS, SISTERS LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS
The Big Brothers and Big Sisters program in Lycoming County needs new volunteers to mentor 33 boys and girls ages 7 to 13 who are currently on the wait list for the program. According to coordinators, children are paired with adult mentors to foster meaningful, one-on-one relationships for support, encouragement, and opportunities for growth. Recruiting male volunteers is a challenge, but studies about the work that dedicated volunteers do say, they help keep a bigger percentage of children from skipping school or getting involved in drugs, and ultimately help them graduate.
