NEW DRUG CHARGES FOR MOUNT CARMEL MAN
A Mount Carmel man is facing new drug charges following a police investigation. Officers say 47-year-old Daniel Derck sold more than five grams of methamphetamine to a confidential informant during controlled buys earlier this month at his North Locust Street home. Police say the deals were arranged through phone calls and text messages. Derck now faces multiple felony charges, including intent to deliver and criminal conspiracy. He was arraigned Thursday and is being held on $50,000 bail, with additional cases and a trial already pending.
LEGAL FILINGS CONTINUE IN MUNCY TOWNSHIP
A new legal challenge has been filed in an ongoing dispute over a proposed development in Muncy Township. Township officials are asking a court to pause an order requiring them to sign off on a subdivision plan tied to a planned Bass Pro Shops project. Attorneys argue the plan has not been fully reviewed and could pose legal and financial risks. The motion follows a judge’s recent ruling that the township must approve the plan, as the case continues through the appeals process.
GROUND BROKEN ON WILLIAMSPORT EGG PROCESSING FACILITY
A major new facility is coming to Williamsport. Local leaders broke ground on a Handsome Brook Farms egg processing plant on Reach Road, expected to open by late summer or early fall. The facility will process up to 2.5 million eggs a day and employ at least 80 people, with three shifts operating five days a week. Eggs will arrive from farms across Pennsylvania and be processed for major retailers like Costco. According to the Sun Gazette, the project is set to boost the economy, support agriculture, and bring long-term, family-sustaining jobs to Lycoming County.
TRAFFIC ISSUES TO START SUNDAY IN SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT
A traffic signal upgrade project is set to begin Sunday in South Williamsport. Crews will be working at the intersection of Route 15 south and Central Avenue through Tuesday, with overnight lane restrictions from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. Contractors will excavate the area in preparation for new signal equipment. The work is part of Pennsylvania’s Green Light-Go Program, aimed at improving traffic flow and safety. Drivers should expect delays while the project is underway.
APPEAL DENEID FOR MAN FACING LIFE IN PRISON
A Shamokin man convicted of murder will continue serving life in prison after his appeal was denied. State Superior Court upheld the 2022 conviction of 24-year-old Corey Quincy, who admitted to killing Rhonda Pearce with a sword. Investigators said the homicide was tied to a dispute over drugs. Northumberland County District Attorney Michael O’Donnell, who prosecuted the case, says the ruling ensures Quincy will remain behind bars without the possibility of parole.
JAIL VIDEO SURVELLANCE WILL NOW BE KEPT A YEAR
Officials at Northumberland County Jail are changing how long surveillance video is kept, after a judge ruled in favor of a Right-to-Know request. A Mount Carmel man, Aaron Bressi, sought footage he claims shows him being assaulted by another inmate. The court ordered a full search, but officials say the video had already been overwritten. A judge denied the county’s appeal, prompting the jail to now keep video recordings for up to one year moving forward.
LEGISLATION TO BRING CHANGING STATIONS TO MEN’S BATHROOMS
The Pennsylvania House has narrowly passed a bill aimed at expanding access to baby changing stations in men’s restrooms. Lawmakers approved the measure 102 to 99 along party lines. The proposal, introduced by Centre County Representative Scott Conklin, would require changing stations in certain public buildings during new construction or major renovations. Supporters say it reflects modern parenting roles, as more men take on caregiving duties. The bill includes some exemptions and now heads to the state Senate for consideration.
NEW PRINCIPAL AT A WASD INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL
The Williamsport Area School District is preparing for a leadership change at Lycoming Valley Intermediate School. David Michaels will take over as principal July 1 following the retirement of longtime principal Timothy Fausnaught after 17 years. The school board approved the move at its latest meeting, where members also addressed construction updates, staffing changes and new equipment purchases. Officials say Michaels brings experience from Curtin Intermediate as the district continues planning for the upcoming school year.
