ANOTHER GUN STORE BURGLARY IN LYCOMING COUNTY
State police are investigating another gun store burglary in Lycoming County, the third this month. According to the Sun Gazette, just before 4 a.m. Saturday, thieves used a stolen 2025 Kia Telluride to smash into National Archery and Outdoors on Route 44 near Elimsport, stealing multiple firearms before abandoning the SUV in Williamsport. Troopers say it’s the same method used in two earlier break-ins at Operation Freedom Firearms and Northeast Trade Company earlier this month. The stolen vehicle has been impounded and searched, but no arrests have been made.
ELECTRICAL FIRE DISPLACES COUPLE
A Limestone Township couple is displaced after an electrical fire broke out in their kitchen Monday afternoon. According to the Sun Gazette, Nippenose Valley Fire Chief Dean Miller says the blaze began when the stove was placed in a cleaning cycle, sparking an electrical short that ignited nearby cabinets and flooring. Heavy smoke was coming from the home on Shadle Road when crews arrived just before 1 pm. Firefighters from several departments had the blaze under control in about 15 minutes. No one was hurt. The unidentified couple said they have fire insurance, but will be unable to return home for several weeks.
PA LIHEAP DELAYED DUE TO FEDERAL SHUT DOWN
The start of Pennsylvania’s Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program is delayed until December 3 because of the ongoing federal government shutdown. The Department of Human Services says it hasn’t received its federal funding to launch the program, which helps more than 300,000 families pay heating bills during winter months. LIHEAP typically provides over $215 million in annual assistance statewide. Once the shutdown ends and funds are released, applications will open. Meanwhile, utilities are reminding customers that additional assistance programs remain available.

The 9,000-square-foot facility will feature indoor and outdoor dog parks, glass-door kennels, and an education center to support both pets and adopters. Yeagle says the project’s “Mercy Gate” will offer a safe, anonymous way to surrender pets. The Safe Haus is expected to open by spring 2026.
MONTGOMERY BOROUGH COUNCIL MEMBER FACES MORE CHARGES
A Montgomery Borough Council member faces another set of charges after a previous conviction for assault. According to the Sun gazette, police say 45-year-old Laurel Kathryn Green and her boyfriend, 48-year-old Jason Wayne Reese, were both charged with simple assault and harassment after a fight earlier this month at their home on Wagner Avenue. The pair allegedly argued for hours after drinking, and the dispute turned physical. Both later pleaded guilty to summary harassment. Last year, Green was convicted of simple assault after striking her daughter during an alcohol-fueled argument.
DENTIST TO SPEAK TO SUNBURY COUNCIL ON BENEFITS OF FLOURIDE After a recent Sunbury City Council vote to remove fluoride from the city’s water, three council members say they want the issue revisited. According to the Daily Item, Mayor Josh Brosious, Councilmen Jim Eister and Nate Savidge say they’re concerned about the health impacts and will hear from local dentist Dr. Julio Lara at Monday’s meeting. Lara warned fluoride removal could harm children’s dental health, citing data showing fewer cavities in Sunbury compared to nearby towns without fluoridated water. The Municipal Authority voted 4-3 to remove fluoride, citing employee safety concerns.
AGREEMENT FOR MILL HALL FIRE SERVICE BEING DISCUSSED IN LOCK HAVEN
Lock Haven City Council debated a proposed three-year agreement Monday to provide fire protection services to Mill Hall Borough starting January 1. According to the Record Online, Mill Hall would pay the city $32,350 annually, with funds split between Citizens Hose Company, Eastside Fire Rescue, equipment replacement, and administrative costs. The city would also acquire two additional engine tankers, with at least one to be stored in Mill Hall. Some council members raised concerns over the cost and the 50/50 funding split between fire companies. The proposal now heads to Mill Hall Borough for review at its October 28 meeting.
NATIONWIDE DRUG TAKE BACK DAY IS SATURDAY
Residents can safely clear out their medicine cabinets this weekend during National Drug Take Back Day, happening Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sponsored by the Drug Enforcement Administration, the event features drop-off sites across the region where people can anonymously dispose of unused or expired medications. Officials say the effort reduces prescription drug misuse, accidental poisonings, and environmental harm. In April, Pennsylvanians turned in nearly 32,000 pounds of unwanted medication. A full list of local drop-off sites is available at ddap.pa.gov.
