TWO ALARM FIRE IN WATSONTOWN
Multiple fire departments from Northumberland, Union, and Lycoming counties responded Thursday night to a building fire at Watsontown Brick Company along Portmay Road in Delaware Township. According to the Standard Journal, first crews arriving around 11:30pm reported heavy flames and quickly upgraded the blaze to a second alarm. Portmay Road was closed as firefighters battled the fire, with units from Warrior Run, Milton, White Deer, Turbot Township, Lewisburg, and Lycoming County on scene. No injuries have been reported, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
TRAFFIC STOP LEADS TO ARREST FOR LYCOMING COUNTY MAN
A Lycoming County man already facing drug charges is back in jail after a traffic stop in Penn Township. According to the Sun Gazette, State police say 32-year-old Joshua David Vroman was pulled over on Beaver Lake Road in August for speeding and a broken tail light. Troopers found marijuana in plain view and later seized meth, pills, and paraphernalia after obtaining a warrant. Vroman and his passenger, 40-year-old Tiffany Joann Cressley of Hughesville, are charged with multiple drug offenses. Cressley was released on $35,000 bail, while Vroman remains jailed on $50,000 bail. He also faces additional charges in separate cases.
CITY COUNCIL CONSIDERING SELLING CITY HALL BUILDING
Williamsport City Council is weighing the future of the condemned City Hall, considering selling the historic 1891 building and possibly leasing back space. According to the Sun Gazette, Councilman Jon Mackey notes another fall and winter could cost $20,000 just to heat it, with Public Works Director Scott Livermore recommending the thermostat stay at 65. The building is still used by police for evidence storage and the weight room. Consultants recommend selling the property, as discussions about what directions to go continues.
OKTOBERFEST IN MIFFLINBURG THIS WEEKEND
The 20th Annual Mifflinburg Oktoberfest takes over Community Park today and tomorrow, featuring family-friendly fun. A special Oktoberfest 5K race starts at am Saturday, with registration opening at 7am. Participants over 21 receive a glass stein and first beer, while under-21 participants get birch beer in a plastic stein. The festival is today 1 to 10 p.m. and tomorrow from 11am to 9pm. Designated drivers get free admission and birch beer.
MAN STEALS CHILD’S BACK PACK WITH ITEMS INSIDE
A Shamokin man faces theft charges after allegedly stealing a child’s backpack at the Miller Center in Lewisburg last month. According to the Daily Item, Buffalo Valley Regional Police say surveillance footage captured 28-year-old Dale Hart Sr. taking the bag, which contained hundreds of dollars worth of items. Police located Hart three days later and arrested him. He is charged with theft and related offenses. Hart is scheduled for a preliminary hearing in District Court on November 4.
CHICKEN FARM PLAN STILL BEING SCRUTINIZED
A proposed solar-powered chicken farm in Muncy Creek Township continues to draw packed hearings and heated debate. According to the Sun Gazette, Bollinger Solar wants to build a 33-megawatt solar farm with five barns holding 70,000 chickens each, creating what’s known as an agrivoltaic project. Supporters say the project could boost renewable energy and egg production, while an appraiser testified the solar panels would have little to no impact on nearby home values. But neighbors and opponents argue property values, noise, glare, and stormwater issues haven’t been fully addressed. Hearings will continue October 8 and October 29 at 7pm both days at the Muncy Area Volunteer Fire Company.
PENNDOT RESUMES OVERNIGHT WORK NEXT WEEK AT THE SPUR
Work resumes next week on a new Truck Rollover Warning System at the Route 15, Interstate 180, and Route 220 interchange in Williamsport. According to PennDOT, the $879,000 project aims to alert tractor-trailers approaching the sharp Route 15 southbound curve at speeds over 45 miles an hour. Crews will work Sundays through Thursdays overnight, from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m., with alternating lane restrictions between the Foy Avenue exit and the interchange. The system uses radar detectors and message boards to warn truck drivers to slow down. Completion is expected this fall, weather permitting.
HERITAGE DAYS IN WATSONTOWN THIS WEEKEND
The 46th Annual Heritage Days returns to Turbotville this weekend, offering a glimpse into 18th and 19th-century life. According to the Warrior Run-Fort Freeland Heritage Society, the event features live demonstrations like blacksmithing, rope making, colonial food making and reenactments of the 1779 Battle of Fort Freeland. The event is tomorrow from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Hower-Slote House and Historic Warrior Run Church. Children under 5 get free admission.
