MAN ASSAULTS HOSPITAL WORKER
A Williamsport man is facing felony charges after allegedly assaulting a hospital worker at UPMC Williamsport. According to the Sun Gazette, police say 33 year old Dominick Evans, punched a registration clerk in the emergency department Tuesday night in an unprovoked attack, leaving the victim with injuries that required treatment. Security stopped Evans as he tried to flee. After being medically cleared, Evans who was already on probation, was arraigned on felony aggravated assault, disorderly conduct, and harassment. He is being held at the Lycoming County Prison on $35,000 bail.
PHONE SCAM WARNING FROM SHERIFF’S OFFICE
Lycoming County Sheriff Mark Lusk is warning residents about a phone scam. According to the Sun Gazette, callers posing as law enforcement officers, claim there’s a legal matter they have to address and direct victims to call a fake number. Lusk says the Sheriff’s Office never conducts business this way and urges residents not to give out personal or financial information. Scam calls should be reported to the Sheriff’s Office at 570-327-2280 or the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office.
NEW POLICY ABOUT OFF-DUTY COMMENTS FOR WASD STAFF
The Williamsport Area School District has revised its employee “Freedom of Speech” policy. According to Penn Live, the new rules clarify when off-duty comments may conflict with district interests, like disrupting school operations or undermining discipline. The policy was updated on the advice of the Pennsylvania School Boards Association. District officials says the school board follows PSBA recommendations. The changes come amid ongoing litigation and recent misconduct cases involving district staff, though the district declined to say if those events prompted the revisions.
NORTHERN PA COUNTIES NOMINATED FOR BEST FALL COLORS
Potter and Tioga counties have been nominated in USA Today’s 10 Best Readers’ Choice Awards for Best Destination for Fall Colors, highlighting the region’s scenic attractions like the Pine Creek Rail Trail, Cherry Springs State Park, and the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon. The tourism bureau, Visit Potter-Tioga, says the recognition could help boost fall travel and the local economy. Nearly 30 years ago the Pine Creek Rail Trail earned a USA Today Top 10 honor that still draws visitors. Winners will be announced next Wednesday at noon.
RAPE VICTIM FILES LAWSUIT AGAINST KEYSTONE CENTRAL DISTRICT
A former Keystone Central School District student has reported a sexual assault from 2011, and filed a lawsuit against the district, administrators, and former Central Mountain High School teacher and football coach James Renninger. According to North Central PA dot com, the complaint was filed in Bucks County Court and accuses Renninger of grooming and sexually assaulting the then-17-year-old student, and claims the district failed to investigate or notify authorities. The suit seeks damages of more than $50,000 and a jury trial.
WOMAN RESCUED FROM SECOND FLOOR FIRE IN MILTON
A 22-year-old Milton woman was rescued from her second-floor apartment after a dryer fire broke out Thursday afternoon above the Custom Care Pharmacy on Elm Street. According to the Daily Item, fire officials say heavy smoke filled the building around 2:30pm, forcing crews to use a ladder to bring Hope Reichard to safety after finding her asleep inside. Pharmacy staff and other residents were evacuated, and no injuries were reported. Fire authorities say damage to the apartments is extensive, and the cause remains under investigation.
CONTRACT EXTENDED FOR WASD SUPERINTENDENT
Williamsport Area School District Superintendent Dr. Timothy Bowers will remain in his role through June 2029 after the school board approved a new contract. According to the Sun Gazette, the contract will give Bowers an annual salary of $218,000. He said the decision to stay was difficult, but he wants to continue building on district successes and prepare for the next generation of leadership. Bowers, who is in his tenth year with Williamsport and his 21st as a superintendent in Pennsylvania, said his goal is to ensure the district is positioned for long-term success.
HUNTING NIGHT PLANNED IN WELLSBORO NEXT WEEK
State Representative Clint Owlett is inviting area hunters to Tioga County for a Game Commission Night focused on predators, especially the Eastern coyote. According to a news release, the event takes place Thursday, September 18, from 6 to 8pm at the Wellsboro Fire Company Annex. A special laser shot trailer will be open to junior hunters ages 12 to 16 starting at 5pm that day. Game Commission biologist Thomas Keller and local hunter Austin Dunham will speak with a Q&A to follow. Admission is free, but registration is required at RepOwlett.com.

Los Angeles Angels star Mike Trout finally homered Thursday night in Seattle, ending a career-long 28-game homerless drought that put him one shy of reaching 400 for his career.
Trout launched his 399th homer, sending a 3-2 fastball from Mariners right-hander Bryce Miller over the left-center-field wall to tie the score at 4 in the fifth inning. Seattle went on to win 7-6 in 12 innings.
