WILLIAMSPORT EYEING HOME RULE CHARTER
Williamsport City leaders are weighing whether to pursue a Home Rule Charter, which would let Williamsport draft its own rules instead of following state limits for third-class cities. According to the Sun Gazette, financial advisors say Home Rule could give the city more flexibility with taxes — possibly raising earned income tax while lowering property taxes — to help address budget deficits. Officials say it is a lengthy process, requiring a study commission and voter approval. Williamsport last explored Home Rule in 2017 but did not adopt it.
ALLENWOOD DATA CENTER PLANS CANCELLED
Plans for a proposed data center at Union County’s Great Stream Commons in Allenwood have been dropped. According to the Daily Item, county officials say New York–based Data Centric LLC ended its purchase agreement for a 37-acre lot in Gregg Township during the project’s contingency period, allowing the developer to withdraw without losing one hundred thousand dollar deposit. The site, a Keystone Opportunity Zone, was pitched for a 300,000-square-foot facility, but officials say infrastructure demands often delay rural Pennsylvania projects. Commissioners say other companies have already expressed interest in the property.

DRIVE-BY SHOOTING ACCOMPLICE SENTENCED IN UNION COUNTY
A Lewisburg man has been sentenced to just over 8 to 22 years in state prison for his role in a 2020 drive-by shooting in East Buffalo Township. According to the Daily Item, a Union County Judge handed down the sentence yesterday to 33-year-old Stephen Reid, convicted in February of aggravated assault, conspiracy, and firing into an occupied structure. Prosecutors say Reid’s dispute over a marijuana debt led to the targeted attack, which left two men injured. Reid was convicted as an accomplice, even though another man, Julio Gonzalez, was the shooter. Reid was credited with 179 days already served.
ICE AGENTS TAKE BEAVER SPRINGS MAN INTO CUSTODY
Federal immigration agents arrested a 22-year-old Beaver Springs man Tuesday as he arrived at the Snyder County Courthouse for a first-time DUI hearing. According to the Daily Item, police say Ismael Zuluaga, a Colombia native, was taken into custody by plain-clothed ICE agents for allegedly overstaying his visa. He was handcuffed outside the Middleburg courtroom as his wife, who is a US citizen and pregnant, looked on. Zuluaga is being held at Clinton County Jail pending an appearance before a federal immigration judge. Locally, he remains eligible for the state’s Accelerated Rehabilitative Disposition program.
