DUMP TRUCK ACCIDENT HOSPITALIZES ONE
A Williamsport-area man was hospitalized Wednesday after his tri-axle dump truck crashed off Route 654 and overturned in a drainage culvert in Limestone Township. According to the Sun Gazette, state police say 28-year-old Jeffrey McKeag was pinned in the wreckage for a short time following the 9:3am crash, about a quarter mile east of Route 44. Emergency crews freed McKeag, who was then taken by ambulance to UPMC Williamsport. The highway remained closed until early afternoon as PennDOT detoured traffic around the scene.
MAN BREAKS INTO SLATE RUN CABIN
State police say a New York man is jailed after breaking into a Route 414 cabin early Saturday while a mother and daughter slept inside. Troopers allege 40-year-old Jarrette Robert Laflash of Wellsville entered the Slate Run property through a kitchen window, and walked into their bedroom claiming his vehicle had broken down nearby. After being told to leave, police report the homeowners said Laflash urinated on their porch. The car Laflash was driving was later found to be stolen from New York. The man was charged with burglary, trespassing, and other crimes, and remains in Lycoming County Prison on $250,000 bail.
SOUTHSIDE FIRE EXTINGUISHED, CREWS DOUSING HOT SPOTS
Fire crews worked this week to extinguish a 3-acre brush fire on a steep slope overlooking the Little League stadiums in South Williamsport. According to North Central PA dot com, Tiadaghton State Forest officials say the blaze is now contained, but crews are still committed to digging fire lines and dousing lingering hotspots. The fire broke out Tuesday during the Grand Slam Parade, drawing volunteer companies and specialized forestry teams to the scene. Fire personnel say summer wildfires in the region often burn underground in roots and stumps, requiring days of patrols to make sure they’re fully out.
UMC STUDENTS PLAYING AT LITTLE LEAGUE EVENTS
Uptown Music Collective students are once again part of the Little League World Series lineup, with more upcoming appearances scheduled. After their performance at the Little league World series opening ceremonies yesterday, they will be perform next Friday, August 22nd during the Williamsport Welcomes the World festival in downtown, and then close the series on championship day, Sunday, August 24, at 2 p.m. About 25 students, ages 11 to 18, were selected for the chance to showcase their skills before a global audience.
ARMED MAN TAKEN INTO CUSTODY IN SUNBURY
A man is in custody after Sunbury police responded to a report of an armed suspect on the 200 block of Race Street Wednesday afternoon. According to the Daily Item, the nearby Northumberland County offices were placed on lockdown just before 1:30pm. Officers arrived at the scene to find a man matching the suspect’s description, who claimed he had been attacked. Police say he complied when ordered to drop a bag he was carrying before being taken into custody. The investigation continues, with no charges filed as of Wednesday evening.
NON-FATAL HIGHWAY SHOOTING BY TROOPERS JUSTIFIED
The Clinton County District Attorney says that state troopers were justified in a May 24th non-fatal shooting on I-80 after a high-speed chase that began in Union County. According to the Record online, investigators say 36-year-old Jordan Joseph Lantz of Williamsport led police on a pursuit topping 100 miles per hour before crashing near mile marker 186.5. Troopers fired after Lantz refused commands, moved inside his truck, and appeared to brandish what they believed was a gun. He was shot in the leg, treated, and released. No firearm was found. Lantz faces multiple charges, with trial set for September 12th.
SHAPIRO ANNOUNCES FARM INNOVATION GRANTS
At Penn State’s Ag Progress Days yesterday, Governor Josh Shapiro highlighted investments benefiting farms across north-central Pennsylvania, including Lycoming County. According to the Record Online, the administration awarded Agricultural Innovation Grants to 88 farms in 45 counties — projects ranging from nutrient-waste reduction to energy-producing technology. Shapiro says preserving farmland, boosting market access, and supporting disease prevention are priorities, with more funding proposed in his 2025-26 budget. Agriculture generates $132 billion a year for the state economy and supports more than 600,000 jobs.
LARGE GROUP FOR IMMIGRATION FORUM IN LEWISBURG
Nearly 100 people attended a forum on immigration law at the CommUnity Zone in Lewisburg Tuesday night. The event called “We Are All Immigrants”, covered immigration law, debunked common myths, and criticized federal enforcement actions. Those in attendance said valley residents were encouraged by organizers to push for immigration reform, oppose detention expansions, and support due process. Speakers said immigrants strengthen the economy, keep rural communities alive, and contribute to culture. Concerns were also raised over Lewisburg’s federal prison being approved to hold immigrant detainees, with calls for transparency and humane treatment.

The NBA board of governors unanimously approved the sale of the Boston Celtics to a group led by private equity mogul Bill Chisholm yesterday, a deal that values the franchise at $6.1 billion.
