DEPARTMENT OF AGING UNDER AUDIT
Pennsylvania’s Department of Aging is under audit by the state’s top fiscal watchdog. Auditor General Tim DeFoor is launching a performance review of the agency tasked with protecting older adults from abuse and neglect. The move follows a Spotlight PA investigation exposing serious failures in the state’s protective services system. At issue is a new oversight system critics say could mask ongoing problems. The Department of Aging says it’s cooperating fully. The audit’s findings will be made public when complete — the first such review since 2009.

INSURANCE LANGUAGE UPDATED TO MODERN TERMS
Pennsylvania has updated its insurance laws to remove outdated and offensive language referring to individuals with disabilities. The newly signed Act 9 of 2025 replaces terms like “mental retardation” and “physical handicap” with more respectful language such as “intellectual” and “physical disability.” Lawmakers say the update brings the 100-year-old Insurance Company Law in line with modern values and reflects a growing push for more inclusive terminology in state statutes.
