MAN INVOLVED IN SHOOTING AT NORRY COURTHOUSE SENTENCED
A Nescopeck man was sentenced Friday for his role in a deadly August shooting near the Northumberland County Courthouse. According to North Central PA dot com, 22-year-old Carnel Dio Shelborne Jr. will serve two years’ probation after pleading guilty to terroristic threats and filing false reports. Homicide charges were dropped as part of a plea deal. Shelborne was a passenger in a vehicle that boxed in victim Dayveon Creel just before he was shot and killed. The suspected gunman, Denarii Springs, remains at large. U.S. Marshals are offering a reward for the man they say is considered armed and dangerous.
FIRE OF ELECTRIC TRANSFORMER IN MONTOURSVILLE
There were no injuries after a transformer fire broke out behind a Montoursville commercial building early Thursday morning. According to the Sun Gazette, volunteer firefighters were dispatched around 12:30am to 780 Broad Street, where flames were spotted coming from a PPL transformer feeder. Fire officials said crews waited for PPL to arrive and cut power before using a portable extinguisher to put out the fire. The quick response prevented the flames from spreading to the building. The cause of the fire has not been released.
PORTION OF CSVT TO BE NAMED FOR FORMER LOCAL MAYOR
A section of the Central Susquehanna Valley Thruway may soon bear the name of late Shamokin Dam Mayor Joseph McGranaghan. According to the Daily Item, State Senator Lynda Schlegel Culver says a provision to rename part of Route 15 in Snyder County as the Joseph McGranaghan Memorial Highway is included in Senate Bill 78, now awaiting Governor Josh Shapiro’s approval. McGranaghan, who passed away last August, was a longtime council member and key advocate for the $938 million CSVT project. Supporters say the tribute reflects his decades of leadership and public service.
CRIME WATCH GROUP GATHERS IN SUNBURY
The City of Sunbury Police Department held its second crime watch meeting last Tuesday as part of an effort to revive the long-dormant community safety program. According to the News Item, Sunbury Police Chief Travis Bremigen outlined plans to divide the city into four zones and train residents to report suspicious activity directly to police. The program, first launched in the 1980s, is being restructured to help ease the burden on the department’s 11 officers, who handle over 1,000 calls per month during peak seasons. DANVILLE MAN CRASHES AFTER FALLING ASLEEP AT THE WHEEL
A Danville man was seriously injured after falling asleep at the wheel and crashing on Route 54 in Montour County this week. According to North Central PA dot com, State Police in Milton say 44-year-old Michael Bialecki Jr. was driving north at about 7:30am Monday when his car veered off Continental Boulevard, struck a fence twice, and then hit a tree just south of Preserve Road. Bialecki was taken by ambulance to Geisinger Medical Center. Geisinger EMS and Taylor’s Garage also assisted at the scene.
LOCK HAVEN MAN CAUGHT AFTER FLEEING MINOR ACCIDENT ON I-80
A Lock Haven man is facing charges after striking a vehicle carrying a woman and her children on Interstate 80 in Union County last month. According to North Central PA dot com, state police say 32-year-old Joshua Barnhart attempted to pass the woman’s vehicle on the shoulder near mile marker 210, , swerving into the car and hitting its mirror. Barnhart then fled the scene, but the victim provided his license plate to authorities. He’s charged with a misdemeanor and multiple traffic violations with a preliminary coming up July 1.
PENN COLLEGE NAMED A GUARD FRIENDLY SCHOOL
Penn College continues to support their students in the military, earning the “Guard-Friendly School” designation for the sixth straight year.According to a press release, the Pennsylvania National Guard Association awards the honor to schools that recognize and meet rigorous standards for aiding Guard members, veterans, and their families. This spring, the college enrolled 45 National Guard members among more than 200 military-affiliated students. Penn College offers dedicated counseling, career services, discounted tuition, and a veterans resource center to support their success.
DOUG THE CYBERCRIME DOG ADDED TO LYCO’S K-9 FORCE
The Lycoming County District Attorney’s Office has added a new tool in the fight against cybercrime — a 2-year-old electronic storage detection dog named Doug. According to the Sun Gazette, Doug is trained to locate hidden electronic devices like phones, SIM cards, and micro SD cards by detecting a specific chemical used in their components. He is expected to be assigned to cases involving internet crimes against children, the K-9 officer can search homes, vehicles, and even shallow water. Doug was donated by Our Rescue at no cost to the county and is handled by Detective Calvin Irvin, who also serves on an FBI task force.
