HEAT ADVISORY IN PLACE MONDAY
An Extreme Heat Watch continues today in Lycoming and surrounding counties. According to the National Weather Service watch for dangerously hot conditions, with heat index values expected to top 105 degrees. The advisory covers central Pennsylvania, east of I-99 and south of I-80. Officials urge residents to check on vulnerable neighbors, stay hydrated, and avoid prolonged sun exposure. Overnight lows will remain muggy, and pets should also be given shade and plenty of water.
MILTON MAN LOSES CONCIOUSNESS CAUSES SEVERAL ACCIDENTS
Police say a blackout behind the wheel led to a chain-reaction crash in downtown Selinsgrove earlier this month. According to the Daily Item, 28-year-old Keagen Meckley of Milton lost consciousness while driving on North Market Street June 8, striking three parked cars before colliding head-on with a vehicle driven by 83-year-old Doris Holliday. The crash spanned three blocks. Three parties involved in the crash were hospitalized— Holliday suffered serious injuries. All five vehicles were towed. The investigation is ongoing.
PRYSMIAN PROJECT TO BRING LOCAL JOBS TO WILLIAMSPORT
A major expansion at a Williamsport manufacturing plant is playing a critical role in America’s energy future. According to the Sun Gazette, Prysmian Group has partnered with Invenergy to supply up to 12,500 miles of advanced conductor cable for massive transmission projects, including the Grain Belt Express—the largest transmission line in development in the United States. The deal doubles national capacity for high-efficiency cable production and supports grid reliability across the nation. Officials say the expansion brings local jobs and will help drive down electric costs nationwide.
NEW BERLIN DAYS CANCELLED FOR 2025
A long-standing Central Pennsylvania tradition is taking a break this year. According to the Daily Item, organizers of New Berlin Day have announced this year’s event is canceled due to a major construction project replacing the Walnut Street Bridge. The closure impacts traffic flow and safety, prompting the activities committee to postpone the popular festival until August of 2026. The event, held annually for over 50 years, features antiques, crafts, and historical exhibits. Penn DOT has 6 bridge projects planned across Union County this year.
MAN THREATENS NEIGHBOR VIA TEXT WITH LANDLORD
A Williamsport man was charged for allegedly sending a series of graphic threats via text message. According to the Sun Gazette, police say 29-year-old Jeremy Blake Baney of Park Avenue repeatedly texted his landlord last week, threatening to sexually abuse and kill a female tenant in his building. Police say the woman reported being terrified by the messages. Baney was arrested and arraigned on charges including terroristic threats, stalking, and harassment. He remains in the Lycoming County Prison on $35,000 bail.
PENN STATE PROFESSOR ARRESTED FOR STALKING
A Penn State professor was jailed after being charged with stalking and prowling in Patton Township. According to North Central PA dot com, police say 50-year-old Anoop Narayanan was caught peering into a family’s apartment window on Toftrees Avenue — the latest in a series of incidents dating back to April. He was arrested on June 15, and allegedly admitted to watching the family, including a young child, multiple times. Narayanan was denied bail and has a preliminary hearing June 25.
LEAK REPAIRS AT LOGGERS LANDING AT BOWMAN FIELD
Williamsport City Council is taking action to fix persistent rain leaks at UPMC Loggers Landing at Bowman Field at Journey Bank ball Park. Council approved an $89,000 contract with Weatherproofing to seal the outdoor viewing deck along right field. The project is being funded through funds provided by the American Rescue Plan. Work is already underway but has been affected by recent rainfall. Williamsport Public Works Director Scott Livermore says repairs should wrap up by mid-July, weather permitting.
GRANGE FAIR SEEKING QUEEN CANDIDATES
The Centre County Grange Fair is seeking candidates for its 2025–2026 Grange Fair Queen. According to the Lock Haven Express, young women ages 16 to 20 who reside in Centre County and are single are eligible to apply by July 1. A Junior Ambassador program is also open to girls ages 13 to 15. Two orientation seminars are set for July 6 and August 2 at the fairgrounds in Centre Hall. Finalists must participate in interviews, a luncheon, and deliver a speech at the coronation on August 13. Details and applications are available at grangefair.com.
