FIRE AT THE WILLIAMSPORT HIGHRISE WEDNESDAY
The 7th and 8th floors of the William Hepburn Apartments on Lycoming Street in Williamsport were evacuated Wednesday evening after a fire broke out on the balcony of a tenant on the 7th floor just after 5:30pm. According to the Sun Gazette, Laurie Saunders, a tenant at the high rise for 6 years noticed the fire outside her apartment and called 911, warned neighbors and then fled the building. Williamsport fire officials evacuated both upper floors of the building and asked the other tenants to shelter in place while they extinguished the fire by 5:55pm. The evacuees were able to return to their units before 7pm, and Saunders’ apartment is the only one that sustained any fire damage. She was displaced, but is staying with family. No injuries were reported and police are investigating the fire.
SEARCH FOR 10 YEAR OLD PAUSED AFTER HEAVY RAIN THIS WEEK
The South Williamsport Fire Department has announced that they have paused their search for 10 year old Claue Schreffler Algofera who went missing Sunday morning after being swept away by the Susquehanna River while with her family. According to the fire department’s social media pages, they are calling for the pause due to the river’s high waters after the recent heavy rainfall. Officials say there was one report of a body in the water this week, which turned out to be a false alarm once they found it to be a log with branches. Small local search parties have formed looking for Claue along the river banks, and officials say their current search efforts have been exhausted, extending as far as Harrisburg.
WATER MAIN BROKEN AGAIN IN SELINSGROVE
The same unmarked water main in Selinsgrove that UGI crews struck Monday, was struck again yesterday in a different spot. According to the Daily Item, borough officials say water pressure was reduced and the boil advisory has now been extended. According to borough assistant manager Shari Badman, two clean water tests must be conducted before they can give the all-clear. Only one clean test has been conducted.
KYLE PETTY CHARITY RIDE IN MILL HALL TODAY
The Kyle Petty Charity Ride Across America to benefit Victory Function, a network of camps that provides children with serious illnesses and chronic medical conditions a chance to go to summer camp, will make a fan stop in Mill Hall today. Kyle Petty, along with other celebrity riders like Richard Petty and Hershel McGriff, former NASCAR drivers Max Papis, Ken Schrader and Kenny Wallace, and other sports and entertainment personalities, will all be part of the second-to-last-stop fan event at Mill Hall’s Flying J fuel station at 11am.
GIRLFRIEND OF MURDER SUSPECT IN TEEN DEATH ALSO CHARGED The girlfriend of the accused murderer of 19-year-old Kevin Cagle has been charged after police say she helped conceal the teen’s body without calling the authorities. According to North Central PA dot com, witnesses say the night 52-year-old Davere Andre McClain shot Cagle, 49 year old Chata Tania Harris found the body and allowed it to remain in the basement of her home for a day before witnesses say she purchased supplies to clean the area where the body was. McClain was recently arrested for Cagle’s homicide after police investigated the discovery of the teen’s body on I-80 near Mexico Road in October of 2023. Harris is being charged with concealing and tampering with evidence, obstruction of justice, abuse of a corpse, and possession of an instruction of crime with intent, and is in Lycoming County Prison on $50,000 monetary bail.
CHILD HIT BY CAR IN MIFFLINBURG
An 11 year old child was struck by a car at the intersection of Chestnut and Fifth streets in Mifflinburg yesterday and sustained suspected serious injuries. According to the Mifflinburg police, they were dispatched to the accident scene around 4pm and found a 63 year old woman from Mifflinburg was operating the car west on Chestnut Street and struck the child that was in the path of the vehicle. Police are investigating the crash. West bound Chestnut Street was reopened after police cleared the scene after 6pm
WILLIAMSPORT K9 OFFICERS ACCEPT DONATION AT WAHS Williamsport Bureau of Police’s K9 unit received a gift donation from the Williamsport Area High School’s Homeland Security Program students during a presentation recently. According to North Central PA dot com, the K9 police unit, Niko and Kylo along with their human colleagues were at the school to accept the 1000 dollar check. During the assembly, the visiting officers were able to demonstrate and explain the dogs’ skills for the students, teachers and staff. The K9 unit is able to accept donations from members of the public and area businesses.
TROOPERS TO MONITOR TRAFFIC IN WORK ZONES
In an effort to increase highway work-zone safety, PennDOT is deploying “Operation Yellow Jacket”, to place troopers in work zones in unmarked vehicles and monitor potentially dangerous drivers. According to the department, if the trooper sees a violation in the work zone, they will communicate to another trooper in a marked state police patrol unit to initiate a traffic stop. In 2024, PennDOT recorded 1,250 work zone crashes in Pennsylvania, resulting in 22 fatalities, and 62 serious injuries. Since 1970, 91 PennDOT workers have lost their lives.
