FIRE IN SULLIVAN COUNTY DESTROYS AGWAY WAREHOUSE
More than 70 volunteer firefighters battled a massive early-morning blaze in Cherry Township that destroyed a 13,000-square-foot Dushore Agway warehouse on Route 220. According to the Sun Gazette, a truck driver sleeping on site Monday night spotted the flames around 1 a.m. and called 911. Fire crews from across Sullivan, Lycoming and Bradford counties fought the inferno for nearly two hours, with tankers hauling water from nearby ponds. Mildred Fire officials says the building, filled with hay, wood pellets and equipment, is a total loss but no one was hurt. A state police fire marshal is investigating the cause.
VANDALS BREAK SANTA HOUSE’S WINDOW IN LEWISBURG
Sunbury officials say the Santa House at Cameron Park was damaged Monday night after someone smashed a window with a rock. The Litefest Committee had just placed the structure earlier that afternoon, and co-chair Victoria Rosancrans discovered the broken glass Tuesday morning. Police Chief Travis Bremigen says officers are reviewing surveillance footage and will pursue charges. Repairs are expected to cost up to $400, though a local business has offered to cover the damage. Officials urge anyone with information to contact Northumberland County 911.
CONTRACTS APPROVED FOR WAHS STADIUM RENOVATIONS
The Williamsport Area School Board has approved contracts for a 20.3 million dollar expansion and renovation of the high school stadium and tennis complex, funded through bonds and capital reserves. According to the Sun Gazette, architects say a new 11,500-square-foot field house with locker rooms, training space, concessions and a second-floor meeting area should be ready in time for June graduation, with resurfaced tennis courts and new pickleball courts finished by August 21, ahead of the fall football season.
PUBLIC INVITED TO TAKE PART IN GENE HEALTH PROJECT
WellSpan is expanding its Gene Health Project and urging adults to take part in the free screening program. The test looks for genetic risks linked to breast and ovarian cancer, Lynch syndrome, and other familial diseases. More than 43,000 Pennsylvanians have enrolled so far, with over 800 receiving positive results. Participants provide a single blood sample, and genetic counselors review findings and next steps. Anyone 18 or older can enroll at no cost at wellspan.org/genehealthproject.
ACCIDENT IN SUNBURY CLOSED ROUTE 61
Route 61 in Shamokin was shut down for several hours Tuesday night after a tractor-trailer clipped a utility pole at Sunbury and Market streets just before 7, snapping it in half and bringing down wires. According to the News Item, Police say trucker Leon McGirk was traveling west when another truck attempted an illegal left turn into a Dunkin’ Donuts driveway, contributing to the crash. An SUV behind McGirk’s rig struck the fallen pole, but no injuries were reported. Police are reviewing security footage, while PPL crews replaced the damaged pole and PennDOT says the road has reopened.
LOYALSOCK DELI CLOSING
Don Waltman’s Market House Meats & Deli in Loyalsock Township has closed their doors, less than three years after opening that location in early 2022. The Market House announced the sudden shutdown on social media Monday evening. Co-owner Stefanie Allison thanked employees and loyal customers, adding the business is “moving forward in a different direction.” but didn’t elaborate on what’s next. The post says the community hasn’t seen the last of the Market House as they search for a new location.
PA REAL ESTATE STUDY GUIDES AND TESTS AVAILABLE IN SPANISH
Secretary of the Commonwealth Al Schmidt says Pennsylvanians seeking real estate sales or broker licenses can now take their exams in Spanish. Pearson VUE partnered with a Philadelphia firm to translate the four exams and study guides, which became available November first. Spanish exams are only offered in person for now, while online exams remain English-only. Test-takers can switch from Spanish to English on any question, and exam fees remain 49 dollars each or 49 dollars for both if taken the same day.
NON PROFIT WINS RURAL HEALTH AWARD
State and local leaders gathered at Lycoming College Monday night as the Favors Forward Foundation received the 2025 Pennsylvania Rural Health Program of the Year award from the state Office of Rural Health. The nonprofit, founded in 2009, provides rapid assistance to Lycoming County residents facing illness, homelessness, disability and other crises. According to the Sun Gazette, director Beth McMahon said the group routinely furnishes homes, completes emergency cleanups and connects families with needed services, often within 24 hours.
