FIRE AT LANDFILL THURSDAY AFTERNOON
A multiple-alarm fire broke out Thursday afternoon at the Lycoming County landfill in Brady Township, sending more than a dozen tanker trucks to the scene. According to the Sun Gazette, the blaze ignited around 2 p.m. in the landfill’s working face pile, where residential and commercial trash is dumped, and was brought under control within about 30 minutes. County employees used heavy equipment and a 5,000-gallon tanker to help smother the flames. No injuries were reported. The landfill handles about 1,200 tons of trash daily, and operations resumed shortly after 3 p.m. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
MAN ARRESTED AS A SUSPECT IN A STRING OF BURGLARIES
A Muncy man is in custody after police say he carried out a string of business burglaries across Northumberland and Lycoming counties. According to North Central PA dot com, state police say 32-year-old Jesse Stackhouse is charged with multiple felonies, including burglary and theft, tied to several break-ins in May and June. Surveillance video allegedly shows him using a crowbar to steal cigarettes from the Great Value store in Turbotville. Troopers later found him near another crime scene with stolen items. Stackhouse is being held on $50,000 bail pending an October 29 preliminary hearing.
ENERGY COMPANY TO MEET WITH CONCERNED CITIZENS
Talen Energy is planning to meet with the Concerned Citizens of Montour County ahead of next month’s Planning Commission session. According to the Press Enterprise, Talen has reached out to county officials to arrange details, though no date has been set. Company real estate director Marc Jackson requested that topics and logistics be outlined in advance, emphasizing a respectful, open discussion. The meeting to discuss the planned data center, is set to come before Talen’s scheduled appearance before the Montour County Planning Commission on November 19.
VETERAN TRIBUTE ON NORTHSHORE RAIL NEXT WEEK
The North Shore Railroad is honoring veterans with a special event next weekend. The 2nd Annual Veterans Benefit Voyage will offer passenger excursion train rides on Saturday, November 1st, departing from Hufnagle Park in Lewisburg and traveling north to New Columbia. Trains will feature the LVRR 9052 Veterans Unit and LVRR 9050 Memorial Unit, with 100 percent of ticket sales going to Central PA Wreaths Across America and Heroes & Horses. THEFTS OF BRONZE ITEMS AT MOUNT CARMEL CEMETARY
Police are investigating after several bronze vases and at least one grave marker were stolen from the Mount Carmel Cemetery. According to the Standard Journal, cemetery manager J. Kevin Jones says the thefts were discovered Tuesday, though it’s unclear when they happened. One entire marker was pried off its concrete base and taken. Mount Carmel Township Police and nearby parishes have been notified, and the cemetery board is asking the public to stay alert as similar thefts may be occurring in other area cemeteries. An inventory is underway to determine the total loss.
WIDOW IN ROUTE 15 CRASH ASKS FOR TOWNSHIP TO CONSIDER TURN BAN
A woman who lost her husband in a motorcycle crash on Route 15 is asking for safety changes at the dangerous Pinchtown Road intersection in Clinton Township. According to the Sun Gazette, Jennifer Engel urged township supervisors this week to work with PennDOT to ban left turns from the intersection, where her husband, James Engel, was killed in August 2024. Supervisors expressed sympathy and agreed to request a PennDOT safety study. Officials say a meeting will be scheduled soon to discuss possible turn restrictions and other improvements along Route 15.
CHANCE TO ADVOCATE FOR LYCO LIBRARIES
The Lycoming County Library System has launched a new advocacy campaign urging residents to speak up for library funding. According to North Central PA dot com, the “Your Tax Dollars, Your Voice” initiative asks patrons to contact county commissioners before year’s end to support maintaining or increasing 2026 funding. All six county libraries are distributing bookmarks with contact details and a sample message. Nearly half of Lycoming County’s 114,000 residents hold a library card, and officials say libraries saved the community more than $8 million in 2024. More information is available at lclspa.org.
BEEF FOUNDATION EXPANDS BACKPACK INITIATIVE
The Pennsylvania Beef Foundation’s “Beefing Up Backpacks” program is expanding statewide after launching in May with its first deliveries to the Towanda School District in Bradford County. According to North Central PA dot com, the initiative provides high-protein beef sticks to weekend food programs for children facing hunger. So far, more than 60,000 beef sticks have been distributed across 14 counties, reaching about 8,500 kids. Executive Director Nichole Hockenberry says the effort “fills students with nourishment, dignity, and hope” while supporting local farmers and processors across Pennsylvania.
