WOMAN RESCUED FROM NEWBERRY HOUSE FIRE
A woman was rescued from a burning home on Race Street in Newberry early Monday morning. City firefighters arrived to find her hanging from a second-story window, screaming for help. According to the Sun Gazette, crews deployed a ladder and pulled the woman to safety before she was hospitalized for smoke inhalation. The fire was reported at 3:30am and triggered a second alarm – drawing crews from four townships with one firefighter sustaining minor injuries during the incident. The blaze was the city’s third in three days and the cause remains under investigation
PRE TRIAL HEARINGS ON TRACK FOR KENNETH MICHAELS
Two officers were in court recently in the case of Kenneth Michaels, charged with the 2023 shooting death of his brother-in-law. According to the Sun Gazette, both officers admitted they violated procedure by pinging Michaels’ phone without a warrant. Detectives tracked him to Cape May, New Jersey, citing concern for his mental state even though no travel restrictions were in place, and Michaels had been cooperative. Despite the acknowledged breach, he was taken into custody and remains jailed without bail. Legal scrutiny over the warrantless phone ping continues as pretrial hearings move forward.
DRIVE THROUGH FLU CLINIC IN LEWISBURG, KULPMONT
Geisinger will provide drive-through Super Saturday flu shot clinics on October 4th and 18th. According to the hospital, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. each of the days, residents in Lewisburg and Kulpmont can get vaccinated without leaving their cars. Shots for ages three and up are available at Geisinger Lewisburg on Reitz Boulevard and Geisinger Kulpmont on Nevada Drive. For children under three, pediatric vaccines are offered at Geisinger Pediatrics Lewisburg. Local Infectious disease experts say the flu shot helps prevent serious illness and protects vulnerable groups.
SELF-DEFENSE SEMINAR FOR TEEN GIRLS SATURDAY
The Union County Democratic Committee in Lewisburg will host a free self-defense and human trafficking awareness class for girls ages 12 to 18 this Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Lewisburg YMCA’s Miller Center. The event includes hands-on training with instructor Dan Greak and a workshop by Transitions of PA. Organizers say the goal is to equip young women with tools to recognize danger and protect themselves. Space is limited; advance registration is required at gsvymca.org/self-defense. WOMAN CHARGED WITH ANIMAL CRUELTY
A Shamokin woman faces over 30 criminal charges after police discovered 10 neglected animals in her trashed Ashland apartment. According to the News Item, 43 year old Trisha Lynn Howard, was evicted from the West Centre Street residence, where officers found two severely malnourished dogs and eight cats living in filth. One dog was euthanized due to extreme dehydration and dental disease. Howard was charged with felony animal cruelty and multiple misdemeanors. She was arraigned Thursday; a preliminary hearing is set for September 24th.
SEX OFFENDER CHARGED WITH NOT DECLARING NEW ADDRESS
A convicted sex offender is facing new felony charges in Lycoming County. According to the Sun Gazette, 37 year old Timothy Wayne Kuhns II, allegedly failed to register with state police and provide accurate address information after moving a camper between his mother’s home on Dewey Avenue Extension and a river lot in Susquehanna Township. Authorities say Kuhns ignored a June directive from probation to update his address. He waived his preliminary hearing before District Judge William Solomon and was released on $15,000 bail. State police filed the charges following a mid-July investigation.
EUREKA ON TIME WITH SPILL CLEAN UP
Cleanup is nearly complete after a major waste oil release last month at the Eureka Resources facility on Second Street. According to the Sun Gazette, the DEP says about 11,400 gallons leaked from a storage tank, with roughly 3,000 gallons still unaccounted for, with more than 8,400 gallons recovered from inside the building and the city’s storm water system. A permanent plug has been installed, and the tank was completely drained to stop further leaks. An administrative order requires Eureka to remove all waste within 30 days, and officials say the company is currently in compliance with that timeline.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED AT BLOOMSBURG FAIR FOR AMERICA 250 PA
America250PA is calling for volunteers to help staff its Mobile Experiential Unit at the Bloomsburg Fair. The custom-built exhibit celebrates America’s upcoming 250th birthday with trivia games, challenges, storytelling, giveaways, and photo opportunities.
