WOMAN WITH METH ARRESTRED AFTER ENTERING UPMC ER
Police arrested a Williamsport woman after she walked into the UPMC Emergency Room carrying more than 50 grams of methamphetamine. According to North Central PA dot com, 62 year old Brenda Lynn Mooers, had 57 grams of the drug wrapped in plastic and stuffed in her purse, discovered by the Lycoming County Narcotics Enforcement Unit. Mooers is charged with possession with intent to deliver methamphetamine and is free on $15,000 unsecured bail. Her preliminary hearing is scheduled for September 18.
TRIO SENTENCED FOR COAL TOWNSHIP BURGLARY AND SHOOTING
Three men have pleaded guilty in connection with a March 2023 Coal Township home robbery. According to the News Item, 28 year old Rasha Jamal Williams, along with brothers, 22 year old Silas Latorre, and 24 year old William Latorre, admitted to first-degree felony robbery and related charges. Prosecutors say Silas Latorre held the 16-year-old male victim at gunpoint while the group confined him and his girlfriend and stole an iPhone. Williams, currently at Rikers Island, also admitted to firing shots outside a local bar in 2022. Plea deals include up to seven years for Silas Latorre, two years plus probation for Williams and county jail time for William Latorre. Sentencing is set for November 10 in Northumberland County.LANE RESTRICTIONS ON THE SPUR PLANNED THROUGH THE AUTUMN
Motorists in Williamsport should expect overnight lane restrictions this week as PennDOT resumes work on a new Truck Rollover Warning System at the Route 15, Interstate 180, and Route 220 interchange. Starting Monday, September 8, crews will install radar detectors and message boards designed to alert tractor-trailer drivers approaching the southbound Route 15 curve at unsafe speeds. The project will run Mondays through Thursdays, 7 p.m. to 5 a.m., with completion expected this fall.
PICTURE ROCKS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL TO CELEBRATE 100 YEARS
George A. Ferrell Elementary School in Picture Rocks is celebrating its 100th anniversary on September 26, coinciding with Picture Rocks’ 150th community milestone. According to the Sun Gazette, festivities will include opening a time capsule behind the school’s cornerstone, presentations from local historians, and activities for students and staff, with an open house the next day from 10 am to 2 pm. Superintendent Dr. Mark Stamm, a former American History teacher, says he’s especially eager to see the capsule, which dates back to 1925.
WOMAN TREATED FOR MINOR INJURIES AFTER BEING EXTRICATED FROM WRECK
A Maryland woman was taken to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville with minor injuries following a crash involving a car and a tanker truck on Routes 11/15 in Monroe Township Sunday afternoon. State police say Diana Zayver, of Frederick, Md., was driving a Toyota Camry southbound near the Sunset Skating Rink when she merged from the left lane into the right and struck a motor oil tanker out of Ontario, Canada. Zayver became trapped in her vehicle but was freed and treated at the hospital, while the truck driver was uninjured. Snyder County Emergency Management confirmed the tanker had no leaks or threats and returned to service.
MAN ARRESTED AFTER ACCIDENT WITH CHILDREN IN CAR
A Williamsport man has been sentenced after fleeing police with children in his car earlier this year. Prosecutors say 29-year-old Derek Hovan led Towanda Borough Police on a chase in January while two children were inside his vehicle, along with a small amount of meth. Hovan pleaded guilty to child endangerment and drug paraphernalia charges. He’ll serve 15 days to 18 months in the Bradford County Correctional Facility, followed by a year of probation.
FREE FIRE EXTINGUISHER TRAINING IN MILTON
Area businesses and employees are being offered a free hands-on fire safety training program next month. According to the Central PA Chamber of Commerce the program on October 2nd is hosted by Susquehanna Fire Protection Company and will teach participants how to properly inspect and use fire extinguishers during small emergencies. The course covers fire classifications, extinguisher types, and more with live practice to build confidence. Register by September 25th for the event at the Chamber building at 30 Lawton Lane in Milton, watch a training video, and receive handouts, with refreshments and a raffle included. The Union County America250PA Celebration Committee will hold its next meeting on September 18 via Zoom from 6 to 7:15 p.m. According to the Daily Item, residents interested in joining can request the link through email to participate. One of the committee’s initiatives is “Bells Across Pennsylvania,” a design contest for decorating Union County’s 250th bell, part of a statewide project placing one bell in each of Pennsylvania’s 67 counties. The contest is open to all, with a cash award for the winning design. Submissions must be received by October 1, and full instructions and specifications are available online.
