MAN ARRESTED FOR INTIMIDATING WITNESSES
A Williamsport man has been arrested on multiple felony charges after allegedly threatening witnesses in his brother’s court cases. According to the Sun Gazette, 27 year old Aaron Pinkne, allegedly made intimidating gestures toward two detectives and a third person who testified against his brother in separate preliminary hearings earlier this month. Three days later, he allegedly threatened another witness on West Edwin Street. Pinkney waived his preliminary hearing Tuesday and remains jailed in Lycoming County Prison on $100,000 bail. His brother, 18 year old Amontae Pinkney, also remains in custody on related charges.
TREE CRASHES DOWN IN WILLIAMSPORT
A massive silver maple tree came crashing down in the 300 block of Lincoln Avenue in Williamsport just after 3 p.m. yesterday. According to the Sun Gazette, city firefighters were first on scene, quickly joined by about six workers from the city’s Streets and Parks Department. Crews spent more than an hour using chainsaws to cut the tree apart, loading branches into dump trucks bound for the city’s mulch pile on West Third Street. A front-end loader was also brought in to clear heavy debris. No injuries were reported.
MORE PENALTIES ASSESSED FOR EUREKA RESOURCES
The Pennsylvania DEP has issued a new administrative order against Eureka Resources over violations at its Standing Stone Township facility in Bradford County. According to the Sun Gazette, investigators say nearly one million gallons of oil and gas-related fracking waste has been stored there illegally since April 2024, prompting a 90-day mandate to remove and properly dispose of it. DEP continues inspections at Eureka’s Second Street Williamsport site, where the company has submitted a corrective action plan for an earlier August spill. HISTORIC BARN OWNERS ASKED TO SUBMIT PHOTOS, INFORMATION
Pennsylvania officials are calling on residents to help document the state’s historic barns. The State Historic Preservation Office is asking North Central Pennsylvania property owners to submit photos and details about their barns, including name, location, and history. The information will be used to create official records and add barns to the Pennsylvania Inventory of Historic Places. COUPLE ARRESTED AFTER A CRASH WITH CHILD IN THE CAR
A Lewisburg man and his girlfriend face charges after a July crash in Mifflinburg involving a 3-year-old child. According to North Central PA dot com, police say 32-year-old Gregory Doebler was driving under the influence of methamphetamine when he lost control of his vehicle on Chestnut Street, hitting two cars and overturning. His girlfriend, 34-year-old Olivia Mahalski, was in the car with the child. Investigators allege the woman left the child unsupervised inside a restaurant while attempting to flush drugs down the toilet. Doebler is jailed on multiple charges, including felony child endangerment, DUI, and reckless endangerment, with bail set at $25,000. Mahalski posted $10,000 bail on related charges.
ATV USE APPROVED ON CERTAIN STREETS IN SHAMOKIN
Township commissioners have approved a measure allowing ATVs to use certain streets to access the Anthracite Outdoor Adventure Area portal in Shamokin. According to the News Item, last night’s 3-1 vote designates Maple Avenue, Tioga, Howard, and Clay streets for escorted ATV traffic, with a speed limit of 25 miles per hour and hours restricted from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Some residents and a commissioner candidate opposed the plan, citing safety concerns near a playground and assisted living facility. Supporters say the change will boost local businesses and fall tourism.
PA SENATORS ASK FOR EFFORT AGAINST ANTI-SEMITISM ON PA CAMPUSES
Pennsylvania’s U.S. senators are urging five state universities to step up efforts against antisemitism on campus. According to a news release Senators John Fetterman and Dave McCormick sent letters to Penn State, University of Pittsburgh, Temple, Lehigh, and the University of Pennsylvania following a sharp rise in antisemitic incidents last year, including assaults, vandalism, and targeted harassment. The senators called on campuses to allocate resources to protect Jewish students and ensure their safety. Recent Anti-Defamation League reports show several Pennsylvania universities received low grades for campus conduct, while Penn State was rated “Better than Most.”
