BRUSH FIRE IN SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT
As the Grand Slam Parade kicked off last night in Williamsport, thick smoke rose from a mountain behind Lamade and Volunteer Stadiums. A forest fire was first reported around 4 p.m. along Sulphur Springs Road. Emergency crews from Montoursville, Loyalsock, and Tiadaghton responded to the scene near South Market and Main Streets behind the Lakeview Apartment complex. Loyalsock Fire officials said the steep terrain where the fire was located was a major challenge, with some crews hiking in on foot. State Forestry teams and drone pilots joined the fight. One firefighter was injured but there’s no word on their condition or more information about the timeline of extinguishing the brush fire last evening.
DRUG CHARGES OVER METH FOUND IN TACKLEBOX
A Lycoming County man on probation is facing new drug charges after police say they found crystal meth in his possession. According to North Central PA dot com, police were called to the home of 39-year-old Joseph Phillip Baskin when a relative reported he had a trash bag of marijuana in his room. Police say meth was found in a container in a tackle box during the search, and Baskin admitted it was his. A family member also found marijuana in a safe. Baskin has a criminal record dating back to 2003 and is charged with possession of a controlled substance.
BUCKNELL ACCUSED OF OFFERING DISCRIMINATORY SCHOLARSHIPS
A national civil rights group has filed a federal complaint accusing Bucknell University of offering 28 scholarships that discriminate based on race, national origin, or sex, violating Title 6 and Title 9. According to the Daily Item, the Equal Protection Project is seeking a U.S. Department of Education investigation and changes to ensure all scholarships comply with federal law. Bucknell says it is in compliance and continually reviews its policies. The challenged scholarships include awards reserved for specific genders or ethnic groups.
FLOAT EVENT TO RAISE MONEY FOR FIRE COMPANIES
The first-ever Fire Float will happen in Lock Haven Sunday, August 17 to raise money for Citizens Hose Fire Company and Eastside Fire Rescue. According to the Record Online, for a $10 donation, participants can float on rafts and tubes from Peddie Park to the City Beach between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., with parking at Commonwealth University–Lock Haven and shuttles to the launch site. The Lock Haven Fire Department and PA Fish and Boat Commission will provide water safety. Vesper Street will close for vendors, food trucks, and entertainment until about 5 p.m.
FORMER SECURITY GUARD THREATENS EMPLOYER, LITTLE LEAGUE
A former Little League World Series security guard is in custody after allegedly threatening a mass casualty attack. According to the Sun Gazette, police say 20-year-old Isaiah Randall of Williamsport texted his supervisor after being sent home last Wednesday, suggesting the facility beef up security because was coming back. Authorities say Randall then posted a “Mass Casualty Event” countdown on social media, tagging ESPN, Little League, and his former employer, Securitas. U.S. Marshals arrested Randall without incident Tuesday. He’s charged with eight felony counts of terroristic threats and harassment, and is held in Lycoming County Prison on $125,000 bail.
MAN ACCUESD OF ROAD RAGE GETS MORE CHARGES ADDED
A Roaring Branch man already awaiting trial for 40 charges from a January 2024 road-rage incident now faces additional counts. According to the Sun Gazette, state police say 76-year-old Kenneth George Harvey intentionally rammed two vehicles with his Dodge Ram pickup on Route 14 in Lewis Township last year. No serious injuries were reported. In March, investigators added two counts each of stalking and attempted aggravated assault after new evidence surfaced. Court records say it was determined that there is enough evidence to proceed. Harvey remains free on bail.
PA BUDGET DEADLOCKED FOR NOW
Pennsylvania lawmakers remain deadlocked over the state budget after the Senate passed a $47 billion stopgap plan Tuesday. According to the Center Square, the measure would level-fund most government operations while negotiations continue on school and public transit funding. Democrats criticized the bill, saying it ignores Governor Shapiro’s proposal and fails to meet court-mandated education increases. The party-line vote now moves to the House, which won’t reconvene until September 22. Lawmakers say talks will continue to find a full budget solution.
NEW ROUTE FOR COAL TOWNSHIP 5K FRIDAY
A new route is set for Friday’s Raider Run 5K at Our Lady of Lourdes Regional School in Coal Township. According to the News Item, runners will travel through Jackson Street, Schoolhouse Lane, Alumni Drive, State Street, Diploma Boulevard, and Indian Avenue before looping back to the school. Roads will remain open but will be monitored by volunteers and the Coal Township Fire Department. Runners can register online through today or register the morning of the event, all proceeds benefit school programs. Medals will be awarded, and canned goods donations earn extra door prize entries. Raider Fest – the community back to school celebration, continues on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. with School tours, basket raffles, food items and other activities.

Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers avoided any significant injury during Tuesday’s practice, after he got his right leg stepped on during a drill at Steelers camp. Rodgers appeared to have a cut on his shin and trainers took him off to the side to ice the affected area and wrap the leg.
Training camp at Saint Vincent College is now complete for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
