LEGISLATION WILL FIGHT PRICE GOUGING DURING EMERGENCIES
After recently experiencing severe weather and extreme heat in Pennsylvania, lawmakers are continuing the effort to protect residents from price gouging during local emergencies. House Bill 1496, introduced in May, would let municipalities crack down on unfair pricing — a power currently reserved for the governor under a statewide disaster declaration. Representative Abney says the change is vital, noting some residents have paid double or triple for essentials like generators, bottled water, and roofing materials. The bill is now under review in the House Consumer Protection Committee.
