MOTORCYCLE CRASH VICTIM IDENTIFIED
The Lycoming County Coroner has identified the victim of Wednesday night’s fatal motorcycle crash as 21-year-old Cogan Metzger. Authorities say Metzger was traveling at a high rate of speed off the Warrensville Road exit of I-180 when he collided with an SUV at East Third Street and Old Montoursville Road in Loyalsock Township. Witnesses reported he was thrown from the motorcycle and found in cardiac arrest. EMS crews attempted life-saving efforts as Metzger was transported to UPMC Susquehanna Williamsport, where he was pronounced dead. The cause of death was multiple blunt force injuries. Toxicology results are pending.
MAN TASED AFTER RESISTING ARREST WHILE USING A HAMMER
A Williamsport man is facing multiple charges after police say he used a hammer to smash windows and dent a car on Dove Street May 28th. According to the Sun Gazette, officers responded and say that 24-year-old Tracy Matthew Butler allegedly refused to drop the hammer and challenged them, prompting the officers to use a taser. Damage to the vehicle exceeded $5,000. Butler was arraigned on felony criminal mischief, resisting arrest, and other charges. He was jailed, then released on $10,000 bail.
NEW LICENSE PLATES FOR PA’S 25OTH ANNIVERSARY
Governor Josh Shapiro has unveiled Pennsylvania’s new “Let Freedom Ring” license plate, now available statewide ahead of the United States’ 250th anniversary in 2026. According to a press release, the plate honors Pennsylvania’s role as the birthplace of American democracy. Nearly 12,000 plates have already been delivered to early applicants. The design is optional and can be ordered online through PennDOT, with personalized options available. Specialty plates will adopt the new design in the coming months. REMEBRANCE GARDEN FOR MAX ENGLE
At Jersey Shore Area High School, members of the Class of 2024 held a heartfelt dedication this week for a new Remembrance Garden honoring Max Engle. According to the Sun Gazette, Engle, a member of the graduating class, passed away in September 2023. The Class of 2024 Memorial Committee organized the ceremony, which included a ribbon-cutting to officially open the garden on school grounds—a lasting tribute to their classmate’s memory.
MAN SENTENCED TO OVER 200 YEARS SENTENCE FOR ASSAULT, DRUGS
A Bradford County man will spend the rest of his life behind bars after being sentenced to a maximum of 206 years for the sexual assault of 17 women and running a meth lab. According to North Central PA dot com, 45 year-old Sean Robert Hall recorded his crimes on video, which investigators uncovered during a 2024 search of his Sayre home. Judge Evan Williams III called the footage “the most disturbing conduct” he’s ever seen, as many victims were unconscious during the assaults. Prosecutors say more details will be released in the coming days.
HOMELESS MAN STEALS WALLET, USES CARDS
A homeless man is facing charges after allegedly using a stolen bank card at two vape shops in Williamsport. According to North Central pa dot com, Police say 42-year-old Joshua Edward Sharer allegedly swiped a wallet from a parked car on Laurel Street, then used a stolen card to make purchases at Texas Vape and Puffs on Hepburn Street. Surveillance video captured Sharer during one of the transactions. He’s now charged with receiving stolen property and fraudulent use of a payment device. No bail or court date has been set.
GRANT FOR HISTORIC TRAIN CAR IN LYCOMING COUNTY
The Williamsport/Lycoming Chamber of Commerce is receiving a $20,000 grant from America250PA to restore an historic Pennsylvania Railroad sleeper-lounge car. According to the Sun Gazette, the funding was announced by State Representatives Jamie Flick and Joe Hamm, who praised the project as a way to honor local history and boost tourism. The restored railcar will be used across Lycoming and neighboring counties served by the SEDA-COG Joint Rail Authority. The grant is part of Pennsylvania’s Semiquincentennial celebration, marking the nation’s 250th birthday in 2026.
FREE SWIM DAY IN MOUNT CARMEL
A day of summer fun is coming to Mount Carmel for underprivileged kids. According to the News Item, T.R.I.U.M.P.H. and AppleGate Recovery are hosting “Splash the Day Away” at the Mount Carmel public pool on July 12 from 10 to 4. The free swim event includes music, face-painting, free books, and prizes. While food will be available for purchase, admission is completely free. Organizers are calling on local groups to donate items or set up resource tables to support families in need. Bathing suits are required.
