MISTRIAL IN FATAL 2023 CAR ACCIDENT CASE
A Northumberland County jury couldn’t reach a verdict Monday in the trial of 21-year-old Emilee Bland, charged in a 2023 crash that killed 13-year-old Christopher Sensing in Ralpho Township. According to the Daily Item, Bland admitted to driving without a valid license, but her attorney argued the crash was a tragic accident, not a crime. Prosecutors say Bland crossed into oncoming traffic after hitting a guardrail. After over three hours of deliberation, the jury was deadlocked, and a mistrial was declared. A retrial is expected.
DUI AND OTHER CHARGES AFTER ONE-CAR ACCIDENT
A woman from Towanda is facing felony endangerment charges and DUI after police say she crashed her car while under the influence with her three children in the car. According to the Sun Gazette, police say 31 year old Paige Williams was involved in a single car accident about 6pm on May 30th on TipTop Road in Asylum Township. Williams and her three children were injured in the crash but have since recovered. She was charged with felony endangering the welfare of children as a parental guardian and other misdemeanors. Williams was held in the Bradford County Correctional Facility in lieu of $50,000 bail and has her preliminary hearing scheduled for today.
BILL TO ALLOW ENERGY CHOICE GOES TO THE PA HOUSE
A bill aimed at protecting fuel choice for Pennsylvania residents has cleared the state Senate with bipartisan support. According to Senator Gene Yaw, Senate Bill 311, dubbed “Energy Choice,” would prevent local governments from banning specific energy sources for home heating or appliances. Senator Yaw says the bill is about consumer rights and keeping energy costs low. The legislation, which is fuel-neutral, now heads to the House for consideration.

MAN CHARGED AFTER FIGHT WITH POLICE OUTSIDE BURNING HOME
A Williamsport man was arrested after interfering with firefighters responding to a blaze on Pine Street on June 4th . According to North Central PA dot com, police say 32-year-old Jamar Laqueel Drummond struggled with officers at the front door of a burning apartment building, claiming his dog was inside. During the scuffle, firefighters were blocked from entering or exiting the building. Drummond was subdued and charged with resisting arrest and obstruction. He posted $30,000 unsecured bail and faces a preliminary hearing later this month.
MERCER COUNTY INMATE FACING MORE CHILD ABUSE CHARGES
Steve Randal Guthrie, a 39-year-old inmate at the state prison in Mercer, now faces additional child molestation charges. According to the Sun Gazette, police say the abuse occurred at Guthrie’s former Williamsport home between April 2020 and September 2022. He was held for court on multiple felony charges and denied bail. Also charged is his ex-girlfriend, Ashley Rae Kane of Trout Run, accused of endangering a child and corrupting a minor. She is now free on $75,000 bail with both parties awaiting trial.
NEW LOGO FOR SHAMOKIN SCHOOLS
The Shamokin Area School District has unveiled a new official logo honoring its identity and heritage. Designed by artist Dave Tamkus, the logo features a Native American figure with symbolic nods to anthracite coal, the district’s 1965 school merger, and Shamokin’s historic roots. School officials say the design ensures consistency moving forward, with versions available for digital and print use. The district is encouraging businesses and vendors to adopt the new branding. The logo blends tradition with modern design to represent unity and school pride.
BABY SWEETHEART CONTEST GOING ON NOW
The Jersey Shore chapters of Beta Sigma Phi have launched the 2025 Baby Sweetheart contest. Voting runs now through 27 at the Jersey Shore Public Library. Photos of local toddlers are on display, and votes are cast through donations — coins count as face value, while dollars earn bonus votes.
