TEEN VICTIM IN TOWANDA SHOOTING
A14-year-old girl is the victim in a fatal shooting in Windham Township this week. According to the Towanda Daily Review, Pennsylvania State Police say first responders were dispatched just after noon on Tuesday to State Route 187 and Merrill Hill Road, where the teen was found with a gunshot wound to the chest. No arrests have been made, but police say there is no threat to the public. The victim, a former Towanda Area School District student, has not been publicly identified. Grief counseling is being offered, and anyone with information is urged to contact state police in Towanda at 570-265-2186. The investigation is ongoing.
TWO FIRES IN NORTHUMBERLAND COUNTY
Fire crews in Northumberland County responded to two separate fires just 14 minutes apart Monday night—one in Shamokin, the other in Kulpmont. According to the News Item, the first call came at 8:14 p.m. for a fire at the former Lincoln Street United Methodist Church in Shamokin. The building was vacant, and no injuries were reported. Then at 8:28 p.m., firefighters were dispatched to 42 South 14th Street in Kulpmont. Authorities say 2 dogs died in the blaze, but there were no human injuries. The fire caused heavy damage and remains under investigation.
CHESAPEAKE BAY AWARENESS WEEK
Pennsylvania is recognizing June 8th through 14th as Chesapeake Bay Awareness Week under a resolution backed by Senators Gene Yaw and Scott Martin. The week highlights efforts to cut pollution like nitrogen and sediment flowing from Pennsylvania into the Bay, mainly through the Susquehanna River. Officials say while Pennsylvania has no direct bay shoreline, half the state drains into it. The goal is to promote local action and education to improve water quality in both Pennsylvania’s rivers and the Chesapeake Bay.
SOUTHSIDE SOFTBALL HEADS TO STATE CHAMPIONSHIP
The South Williamsport High School Softball team are heading to the Class 2A State Championship game against Neshannock at the Nittany Lion Softball Park in State College this morning for a game at 11am. The community gathered along the roadside from the high school to the highway exit off of Reach Road this morning to cheer them onto victory. TWO SUSPECTS AT LARGE AFTER GUN SHOP BREAK-IN ATTEMPT
|There was another attempted gun shop burglary on Washington Blvd, just two days after a successful break-in at the same location. According to North Central PA dot com, two individuals tried to smash their way into the National Range and Armory early Sunday morning, —but fled after failing to break the window. Authorities are investigating after video surveillance showed the suspects at the scene and police say they are still at large. MAN ARRESTED FOR DISARMING STATE TROOPER
A Port Trevorton man is in jail after allegedly attempting to disarm a Pennsylvania State Trooper. According to the Daily Item, police say 20-year-old Hunter Feese threatened to grab a trooper’s gun during a disturbance call at his home on May 19. When authorities tried to take him into custody, Feese allegedly lunged for their weapon. Police report that Feese’s mother reportedly blocked the trooper’s Taser and sat on her son to restrain him. Feese was charged with felony disarming of a law enforcement officer and is being held in Middleburg on $15,000 bail
BILL TO REMOVE HOMELESS ENCAMPMENTS HEADS TO PA SENATE
A controversial bill is advancing in the Pennsylvania Senate that would allow municipalities to swiftly remove unauthorized homeless encampments from public and private property. According to the Daily Item, Senate Bill 780, introduced by Republican Sen. Joe Picozzi of Northeast Philadelphia aims to address public safety concerns, but critics argue it lacks housing solutions and could worsen homelessness. Some lawmakers warn it may push people from one site to another without real support. The bill passed committee 7-4 along party lines and now heads to the Senate floor for debate.
FLAG RETIREMENT CEREMONY AT KNOEBELS THIS WEEKEND
A special Flag Day event is planned at Knoebels Amusement Resort in Elysburg. According to a press release, Scouts from the Columbia-Montour Council will hold a flag retirement ceremony Saturday, June 14, at 10 a.m. in the Phoenix Courtyard, near the Phoenix roller coaster. The public is encouraged to bring worn or damaged American flags for proper and respectful disposal. Flag Day marks the adoption of the first U.S. flag in 1777.
