MISSING KAYAKER FOUND ON MONDAY
Authorities in Montoursville have recovered the body of the kayaker who went missing Saturday and his identity is expected to be released today. According to the Sun Gazette, a firefighter spotted the person’s body in the water late Monday afternoon near the 500 block of Mill Street. Crews from multiple stations returned to the scene Monday, as search conditions were paused after two unsuccessful search days. Authorities from the State Fish and Boat Commission said the victim’s kayak and the kayak of two others in the party capsized around 11:15am Saturday. The victim may have been overtaken by the strong current the two other people made it safely to shore. The victim’s body was transported to the Forensic Center at UPMC Williamsport.
LANDLORD FINDS BODY IN APARTMENT
Police were on the scene at an apartment building on West Fourth Street late Monday morning after a man was found dead there. According to the Sun Gazette, police report that the body was discovered by the landlord around 10:45 a.m. in a second-floor unit. The man, believed to be in his 30s, was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders. Several officers, investigators, and coroner’s staff were called in. The cause of death has not yet been determined and remains under investigation.
EMBEZZELMENT CASE STILL UNDER INVESTIGATION
Gregg Township is holding off on releasing certain financial records as it tries to recover over $530,000 allegedly stolen by a former employee. According to the Lock Haven Express, in April, the Pennsylvania Office of Open Records ordered the township to provide some financial records related to the bond investigation, but denied a request by media outlet, Spotlight PA, to obtain the township’s communications with its insurance company. Both parties have agreed to pause their court dispute. Pamela Hackenburg, the former township secretary, faces felony charges but hasn’t entered a plea. Officials say they will release more records once the insurer reaches a decision, expected within the next two months.
UPGRADES COMING FOR NEWBERRY PARK
Improvements are coming to a favorite park in the West End. According to the Sun Gazette, it’s been announced that Newberry Park will get a regraded soccer and multi-purpose field, two new pickleball courts, a paved walking path, and 12 new parking spaces, including accessible ones. A precast concrete restroom is also part of the plan, with construction expected to begin in July, wrapping up around Labor Day. Funding will come from the Community Development Block Grant.
FLOODING PROBLEMS IN TWO COUNTIES
Flooding conditions are affecting areas of Union County this morning. According to PennDOT, 8th Street Valley Road and Route 45 in Mifflinburg Borough has a reported closure. In Columbia County, Camp Laving Road between Route 487 and Klinger Hill Road in Sugar Loaf Township is closed for downed trees into utilities. According to the National Weather service a prior flood watch for areas of north central PA was cancelled earlier this morning, but authorities at PennDOT still encourage motorists to use caution and never drive through flooded roadways, since it takes just two feet of fast-moving water to float a car.
CASE FOR MAN WHO PROVIDED LETHAL DRUGS HELD FOR COURT
A judge has upheld charges against a Selinsgrove man accused of supplying the drugs that led to his girlfriend’s death in 2023. According to the Daily Item, 31 year old Anthony Busard, remains jailed on $75,000 bail, facing felony charges including drug delivery resulting in death. Investigators say Busard bought drugs in Philadelphia and gave them to 35-year-old Tiffany Judge, who died in a Monroe Township motel. A forensic pathologist confirmed she died from a lethal mix of fentanyl, meth, alcohol, and other drugs. The court found enough evidence for the case to move forward.
LEWISBURG MAN CHARGED WITH THEFT FOR STEALING AT WORK
A 20-year-old Lewisburg man is facing felony charges after allegedly stealing nearly $4,700 from two 7-Eleven stores during his first few days on the job in May. According to North Central PA dot com, State police say Arashdeep-Singh used Chime and Green Dot cards to transfer store funds into his personal account over a three-day span. He later admitted to the thefts during questioning. Charges include felony theft and fraud, with bail set at $30,000.
AMAZON TO INVEST IN PENNSYLVANIA
Amazon is making a historic $20 billion investment in Pennsylvania, with plans to build advanced AI and cloud computing campuses, starting in Salem Township and Falls Township near Berwick. According to the Shapiro Administration, the project will create at least 1,250 high-tech jobs and marks the largest private sector investment in state history. More sites are under consideration as Pennsylvania positions itself as a national leader in AI innovation and economic growth.
