SHOOTING IN WILLIAMSPORT UNDER INVESTIGATION
This morning at approximately 4:00 AM, Williamsport Police responded to the 600 block of Second Ave for reports of several shots fired in the area. Upon arrival, officers were able to locate bullet strikes to a residence. Officers were informed that several individuals were observed standing alongside the roadway prior to the shooting. No injuries were reported in this incident. The investigation is currently ongoing. Williamsport Police are asking anyone with information regarding this incident to contact Agt. KAYAKING TRIP ENDS TRAGICALLY
A weekend kayaking trip on Loyalsock Creek has ended in tragedy. According to the Williamsport Sun-Gazette, an experienced kayaker is now feared to have drowned after his kayak overturned in a fast moving stretch of water known as “the rapid s,” located about a half mile south of Broad Street in Montoursville. Emergency crews spend most of Saturday and Sunday searching the area by boat, but as of 4 p.m. Sunday, when the search was called off due to steady rain, there was still no sign of the missing man. Officials with the PA Fish and Boat Commission have stated “This is a recovery at this point”. This marks the third drowning in Lycoming County in just five weeks.
GOVERNORS PROPOSED BUDGET PROVIDES RVTA FUNDING
The Shapiro Administration has unveiled a list of transit agencies in line for extra funding under the proposed state budget — and Williamsport’s River Valley Transit Authority is among the top recipients. According to NorthcentralPa.com, RVTA would get nearly $1.4 million, more than any other transit system in northcentral Pennsylvania. That amount is just shy of what the city was ordered to repay the federal government — nearly $1.5 million — after a scandal involving RVTA’s former manager. The city missed its February deadline, later approving a repayment plan in April. The PA Budget is due to be voted on this summer.
CONCERNS ABOUT SOLAR AND CHICKEN FARM PROPOSAL
Residents in Muncy Creek Twp recently voiced concerns about a proposed solar array and chicken farm project during a conditional use hearing. According to the Williamsport Sun Gazette, the plan by Sunny Side Up Farms, LLC includes 11 solar arrays producing a total of 33 megawatts of power alongside a farm with 350,000 free-range egg laying chickens. The agrivoltaic project, developed by the Bollinger and Wagner families of Lancaster County would allow the chickens to roam under the solar panels. Ken Walton Meadow Valley Electric says the arrays will be monitored remotely.
STEINBACHER NEW WOODLANDS LOAN OFFICER
Woodlands Bank has added a new face to its commercial lending team. According to NorthcentralPA.com, Nathan Steinbacher has joined the bank as a commercial loan officer. A Lycoming County Native, Steinbacher brings in over 10 years’ experience in the financial industry, with a background in credit analysis and auditing. He continues to call the area home, raising his family in the community where he grew up.
CHARGES FILED AFTER TWO PURCHASE DRUGS FROM INFORMANT
Two women are facing charges after buying crack cocaine from a confidential informant in Williamsport. According to Northcentral PA .Com Andrea Shearer and Janel Kline arranged the transaction on March 12. Shearer drove Kline and the informant to Scott and Oliver Streets, where Kline purchased the drugs and handed them over. A subsequent search of the vehicle found a crack pipe. Shearer faces charges of conspiracy, possession with intent to sell, and drug paraphernalia, while Kline is charged with intent to sell and illegal use of a cell phone. Both are scheduled for a preliminary hearing on June 10.
FUNDS PROVIDE SUPPORT FOR YOUTH IN NEED
Diakon Family Life Services has been awarded a $7,750 grant from the Pearls with a Passion Fund by the First Community Foundation Partnership of Pennsylvania. The funding will expand student crisis intervention programs in Lycoming County, helping children and youth in need of mental health support. The grant will enable Diakon to provide in-school assessments, short-term counseling, and referrals to long-term care. This will help the organization respond more quickly to students facing emotional crises. The Pearls with a Passion Fund has awarded $277,000 since 2013.
AGRICULTURAL USE SURVEY COMING TO SNYDER COUNTY
During the week of June 16, farmers in Snyder County will see a vehicle with a flashing light traveling about and stopping periodically along the road looking at crop fields. The team travels a predetermined route and stops at regular intervals to capture information about land use and agricultural activity at each stop. LAUREL FESTIVAL BEGINS THIS WEEKEND IN WELLSBORO
The 83rd Pennsylvania State Laurel Festival is set to begin in Wellsboro from June 14th to 22nd. The festival’s highlight is the crowning of the 2025 Laurel Queen. Throughout the week, attendees can enjoy juried arts and crafts fair, the Queen’s pageant, a pet parade and more. The traditional two-hour Laurel Festival Parade will feature high school bands, drum and bugle corps, floats, fire trucks, and Laurel Queen Participants. This annual event, first held in 1938, is organized by the Wellsboro Foundation and the Wellsboro Area Chamber of Commerce.
