PHILLY MAN ATTEMPTS TO ELUDE POLICE IN STOLEN CAR
A Philadelphia man was arrested Tuesday afternoon after leading police on a high-speed chase in a stolen vehicle. According to the Sun Gazette, Muncy Borough police said they detected a stolen vehicle alert around 5:30pm with the driver, 26-year-old Kiyair Jamiel Smith, fleeing when police attempted a traffic stop. The pursuit reached speeds over 100 mph through Watsontown and Allenwood and ended when Smith crashed into dumpsters at a gas station and attempted to flee on foot. A K9 unit apprehended him in dense vegetation and he was charged with felony counts of receiving stolen property and fleeing or attempting to elude officers, and more. He was incarcerated at the Lycoming County Prison in lieu of $150,000 bail.
ANOTHER TRESSPASSING INCIDENT AT THE LAURELTON CENTER
Four men are facing trespassing charges but one man involved will not be charged after being found at the former Laurelton Center in Hartley Township on May 25. According to the Daily Item, State police say the group, aged 18 to 26, was discovered on the property Sunday afternoon around 2pm. Four individuals received citations for defiant trespass, while one was not cited. This marks the ninth such incident at the site in just over a year. The case has been filed in District Court in Mifflinburg.
REWARD ANNOUNCED FOR ACCUSED MURDERER
U.S. Marshals are offering a $2,500 reward for information leading to the arrest of Denarii Springs, a 26-year-old Northumberland man wanted for murder. According to the Daily Item, Springs is accused of fatally shooting 20-year-old Dayveon Creel behind Weis Markets in Sunbury in August of 2024, during a break in an attempted homicide trial at the nearby courthouse. Two other men were arrested in connection with the case but were later cleared of homicide charges. Springs is considered armed and dangerous, with ties to the Bronx and northeastern Pennsylvania. SUMMER LEARNING PROGRAM AT JV BROWN LIBRARY
The Lycoming County Library System is kicking off its Summer Learning Adventure soon with a series of events and activities for all ages. The public is invited to pick up Adventure Passports at the library on East 4th Street in Williamsport on June 15th. Completed passports can be returned during the summer finale for a chance to win prizes. Upcoming events include Hiawatha rides, and a Family Color Run in June, a guided Bird Walk in July and more. Most program registrations open two weeks prior to each event and can be made at calendar.jvbrown.edu. The program is fully funded by donations and sponsors.
TWO MISSING CHILDREN REPORTED IN WILLIAMSPORT
Williamsport police have announced a missing persons report for two minors who were last seen yesterday around 6:30pm and they report the two might be at special risk of harm or injury. According to a Missing Endangered Person Advisory, 13 year old Maxion Bolden, a 100 pound black male about 5’1” tall and 9 year old Airee Smith-Nelson a 75 pound black female about 4’8’ tall were last seen around the 1100 block of Memorial Avenue yesterday. JUDGE STEPS DOWN FROM ASSAULT CASE
A Snyder County judge has stepped down from a high-profile assault case after rejecting a plea deal that the alleged victim argued was too lenient. According to the Daily Item, Judge Lori Hackenberg agreed to recuse herself from the case involving Ronald A. Childress Jr., who is accused of choking and threatening Nicole Patnaude with a butcher knife during a May 2024 altercation. At a May 15 hearing, Patnaude objected to the proposed 10- to 20-year sentence, stating that Childress had a history of violence and had not taken responsibility for his actions. Judge Hackenberg then rejected the plea agreement. The defense for the accused filed a motion for recusal, arguing that the judge showed bias. Childress faces multiple charges, including felony aggravated assault, felony strangulation, and misdemeanor unlawful restraint. Jury selection begins in July
JUROR COMPENSATION IN PA COULD INCREASE
A significant increase in juror compensation is being discussed by Pennsylvania lawmakers in Harrisburg. Jurors currently receive $9 per day for the first three days of service, and $25 per day thereafter which has not changed since 1959. House Bill 1484 proposes a flat $40 daily rate for all jurors, regardless of the length of service. The bill also aims to modernize payment methods, but the bill does not address the lack of employer compensation for employees serving on jury duty. The bill has been referred to the House Judiciary Committee for further consideration
FEDERAL FUNDING CUTS SENIOR VEGETABLE VOUCHER PROGRAM
Area seniors are facing significant reductions in the Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program due to recent federal funding cuts. In Union and Snyder counties, 337 fewer seniors will receive vouchers, and the voucher amount has decreased from $50 to $25. Northumberland County’s program is also affected, with a 26% reduction in requested vouchers and a two-week delay in availability. Voucher applications will be processed on a first-come, first-served basis, with no guarantee of availability.

SPELLING BEE
Thirteen-year-old Faizan Zaki from Allen, Texas, clinched victory at the 2025 Scripps National Spelling Bee by correctly spelling “éclaircissement” in the 21st round. This win follows his runner-up finish last year, making him only the fifth speller to win after a second-place finish. Zaki’s accurate spelling of the final word without requesting additional information impressed the audience, earning him the championship title and a $50,000 prize.
