BODY OF TEN YEAR OLD GIRL RECOVERED FROM SUSQUEHANNA SATURDAY
The body of Claue Schreffler-Algofera, the ten year old third grader from South Williamsport School District, who was swept away in the Susquehanna River while playing near the water with her family on May 4th, was recovered in Northumberland County on Saturday. According to the Sun Gazette, South Williamsport Fire Department announced the confirmation of the girl’s identity after 6pm once Lycoming County authorities were informed of the recovery by police in Sunbury. South Williamsport school officials acknowledged the tragedy with grief and sorrow and say it may continue to affect some students and staff at the school so they will continue to provide counseling services today as needed.
TWO HOUSEHOLDS DISPLACED AFTER CITY FIRE FRIDAY
A fire at the 600 block of First Avenue in Williamsport displaced 19 people in two households just before 9pm Friday night. According to the Sun Gazette, the members of the families, who spoke only Spanish, were outside of the home when firefighters arrived and there were no injuries but one woman was treated at UPMC Williamsport after she fainted. The fire was contained in about 20 minutes. South Williamsport, Old Lycoming Township and Montoursville firefighters and City Firefighters responded to the two alarm blaze, as well as Mayor Derek Slaughter who speaks fluent Spanish and served as an interpreter on the scene between the residents and emergency personnel. The Red Cross is Assisting the families who were made homeless by the fire.
MAN SENTENCED FOR STEALING SOLAR PANELS
A man has been sentenced in Bradford County Court over the discovery of stolen solar panels in his home. According to North Central PA dot com, 32 year old Gabriel S. Moran who already was facing 18 months to four years in jail for a domestic assault charge from 2024,was also handed a 2 month to 2 year sentence for the most recent solar panel theft. Police seized the items from the property at the 2000 block of Warren Center Road in April and returned them to the rightful owners, Repsol Energy. Police also recovered a stolen solar battery at Moran’s home.
CLINTON COUNTY REST AREAS CLOSED FOR MAINTAINANCE
PennDOT has closed the rest areas at mile marker 194 along I-80 east and westbound in Clinton County to replace the existing water and sewage treatment facilities and plumbing features. The work will continue through this November including demolition and replacement of the existing treatment plants, improving sidewalks and fencing at the site as well replacing existing plumbing features, such as toilets, sinks, and water fountains. Open rest areas along the route are at mile marker 220 in Montour County and mile marker 147 in Centre County.
WILLIAMSPORT MAN DROWNS IN RIVER SATURDAY
A 37 year old man drowned in the Susquehanna River Saturday and the Lycoming County Coroner has released information about his identity. According to the Sun Gazette, Tyler Lance of Williamsport was seen on the east side of the Hepburn Street dam before he jumped into the water for an unknown reason. Police were informed by the Geisinger Life Flight crew who saw Lance in the water and hovered over the location while Williamsport Bureau of Fire recovered the man from the river west of the Greevy Boat Launch. Resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful and Lance was pronounce deceased at the UMPC Susquehanna emergency room around 4:30pm.
TARGET FINED FOR VIOLATIONS AFTER EMPLOYEE DEATH IN 2024
A fine of almost 30 thousand dollars has been imposed by federal regulators against Target Corporation after an employee at their Muncy store died while working there last fall. According to the Sun Gazette, the initial violation that was discovered in the OSHA investigation after Brianna Burley-Inners became fatally pinned between a piece of equipment and a door frame in November of 2024, brought about a 16 thousand dollar fine and a second 13 thousand dollar fine was levied after the store management did not report the death to their safety company in a timely manner. According to Penn Live, the company was also ordered to conduct a comprehensive audit of the facility to identify hazards.
FREE HIGH SCHOOL EQUIVILENCY EXAMS
A two million dollar grant has become available for Pennsylvanians to take their high school equivalency exams for free. According to the Pennsylvania Department of Education, free exams are only available at non-restricted public testing sites or through online proctoring. Test takers can use a promo code – PAFreeGED or PAFreeHiSET – to register to complete the exams at no charge. LOW COST SPAY AND NEUTER PROGRAM TO BEGIN IN 2025
A new spay and neuter program has been announced by the Lycoming County SPCA. According to a press release, thanks to community support and a fund matching challenge from longtime donor Pamela (Hershberger) Jensen and the Kenneth Manely Estate, over 60 thousand dollars has been raised to provide a low-cost spay/neuter services for pet owners in need. After suspension of the SPCA’s former voucher initiative, the generous funding program responds to a critical gap that was created. The first clinic day will occur for cats on May 22, 2025. The first clinic for dogs will occur on June 5, 2025. 120 animals are expected to be helped in the first year of the program.
ROUTE 54 ACCIDENT VICTIM IDENTIFIED
The 21 year old man from Columbia County who was killed in along Route 54 last Wednesday near Washingtonville has been identified. According to the Daily Item, State police at Milton say Christopher J. Anderson of Orangeville was the victim in the fatal crash along Route 54 that closed the interstate between Route 254 and Interstate 80 in Derry and Valley townships for several hours. Police report that Anderson was traveling westbound, and did not respond to workers along the roadway warning about an oversized load traveling through the area. He then struck a tractor trailer that was traveling east on Route 54. His passenger Lillian J. Gansell, 21 of Millville was hospitalized with minor injuries.

Christopher Bell beat Joey Logano by 0.829 seconds to earn his first All-Star Race victory. Ross Chastain finished third, followed by Alex Bowman and Chase Elliott.
The Cup Series will race May 25 at Charlotte Motor Speedway in the Coca-Cola 600, the longest race of the season. Bell won last year’s race.

GOLF
Scottie Scheffler won at Quail Hollow Club Sunday securing the 2025 PGA Championship, adding another signature victory.
Scheffler finished 12-under-par and while there were four golfers tied for second at 6-under-par.
It’s the second major Scheffler has won after winning the 2022 and 2024 Masters. It may also be the start of a hot streak, as it’s his second victory in May after winning The CJ Cup Byron Nelson on May 4.
