SECOND DAY OF SEARCHING FOR MISSING 10 YEAR OLD
The search for the missing 10 year old South Williamsport girl is going into its second day today after officials worked all day Monday to find her. According to the Sun Gazette, South Williamsport officials say the family has announced the name of the girl who was swept away Sunday morning in the Susquehanna River while with her mother and two other children attempted to rescue her but were unsuccessful and were pulled from the water. Officials say it’s a recovery mission now for Claue Schreffler-Algofera, a 3rd grade student at South Williamsport School District, who may have gone into the dam near Front and Winthrop streets. The search will continue today with state police using special equipment to better identify underwater objects along with help from members of North Central Pennsylvania Dive Recovery and K9 Search Team from Elk County.
WIREROPE EMPLOYEE INJURED
An unidentified employee at Wirerope Works Inc. in Williamsport was injured Monday after his right hand and arm were caught in a machine at the plant. According to the Sun Gazette, city firefighters responded to the facility at 100 Maynard Street around 9am Monday and worked for about 30 minutes to free the man from the machinery. He was transported to UPMC Williamsport for treatment with no word on his current condition.
CEMETERY LOOKING FOR HELP IN CLEAN UP EFFORT
Recent storms have caused damage to Highland Cemetery in Lock Haven. According to North Central PA dot com, there is wind damage from fallen trees from the storm April 29th and the cleanup effort is underway. Cemetery officials say not many gravestones were effected in the historic site, but volunteers are being sought along with any financial donations to assist clean up the property along Akeley Lane in Lock Haven. WEBSITE AVAILABLE TO HELP STEP TRANSPORTATION SCHEDULING
A new website tool to schedule and manage trips using STEP Transportation online has been introduced through the Find My Ride Schedule initiative, funded by PennDOT. According to North Central PA dot com, using findmyridepa.org allows users to check their account balance, schedule new trips, get an ETA, view upcoming rides, and cancel trips that they no longer need. The website can be used for trips originally scheduled on the phone.
WATER MAIN BREAK IN SELINSGROVE CLOSES SCHOOLS
A water main break in Selinsgrove shut down schools in the Selinsgrove area School district yesterday. According to the Daily Item, schools dismissed yesterday at 12:30pm after a UGI crew struck an unmarked water main at about 9am on Hower Street and shut off the water in the area as a result. In addition to the school district, the incident also caused water issues on the Susquehanna University campus and for several residences in the area. A temporary repair was complete after 3pm and a boil water advisory is in place through Wednesday afternoon.
PENN TOWNSHIP ACCIDENT INJURES THREE ADULTS
Police say several people were hospitalized after a bus accident in Penn Township last Thursday on Route 35. According to the Daily Item, 71 year old Michael M. Kline was about to turn into Wedgewood Garden, before a driver of a 2020 Jeep Wrangler, 51 year old Jamon L. Folk of Beaver Springs, who police say was distracted, rear ended Kline. Folk, Kline and another adult on the bus, were taken to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville with injuries. Six children between the ages of 3 and 5 who were on the bus were not injured. Folk was charged with following too closely.
FORMER FINANCE DIRECTOR PLEADS GUIILTY
William E. Nichols Jr., the former city finance director and ex-general manager of River Valley Transit in Williamsport was in a Dauphin County Court yesterday and plead guilty to theft by failure to make required disposition of funds and tampering with public records. According to the Sun Gazette, the judge in the case gave Nichols 12 months’ probation. According to court records, Nichols was charged for his role in orchestrating a way to use restricted PennDOT grant funds for non-transit projects, as well as for diverting funds to the non-profit simulated paddle wheel riverboat, the Hiawatha. The court noted that Nichols never benefitted personally from the financial manipulation. The city has recently agreed to pay back $1.4 million owed to the Federal Transit Administration.
COURTROOM TO CLASSROOM PROGRAM IN PENNSYLVANIA FOR STUDENTS
A series of contests for students to learn the importance of the judicial branch of government has been announced by the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania Historical Commission. According to the Daily Item, the Courtroom to Classroom initiative is in place to inspire the next generation of informed, active citizens and leaders. A series of contests for students in all grades including a coloring contest, an infographic, art projects, and video and social media activities are featured this year.
