ELDERLY MAN RESCUED FROM SMOKE FILLED HOME

An elderly man was rescued Saturday from a house fire after an ember sparked the blaze during his use of a torch to burn weeds from his property. A volunteer fireman and two other individuals helped the man living on Pennsylvania Avenue in  Loyalsock Township about 4:30pm. According to the Sun Gazette the man was unable to make his way out of a back bedroom and the house was filling with smoke, but he was not injured.  The man, whose name was not released, was able to return to his home later in the evening after the fire was extinguished. Williamsport, and Montoursville assisted Loyalsock Township with the fire.  

PITTSBURGH MAN FACES RAPE CHARGES IN WILLIAMSPORT

A Pittsburgh man is facing felony counts of rape, unlawful contact of a minor and other charges, after an accuser made claims of abuse during Williamsport police investigations in 2018 through 2020.  According to North Central PA dot com, 22 year old Jared Mychal Thompson, waived his preliminary hearing on Friday in Lycoming County Court.  On May 10th, Thompson’s bail was changed from $250,000 monetary to unsecured. Thompson posted it and was released from the Lycoming County Prison pending his upcoming court appearances.

McCORMICK CONCEDES TO DR. OZ

Candidate for U.S. Senate seat, David McCormick conceded to Dr. Mehmet Oz. Lycoming County’s pick for the Republican nomination for the seat vacated by Senator Pat Toomey bowed out of the race Friday night in Pittsburgh.  McCormick made the decision after two-and-a-half weeks of waiting out final counts in a close Pennsylvania primary, unofficial totals still had Oz leading in the Commonwealth by 972 votes.  McCormick is now supporting Oz in the general election campaign against Democratic nominee John Fetterman.

GARY BROWN HONORED IN WILLIAMSPORT

Former Williamsport Millionaire, Penn State Nittany Lion and NFL star Gary Brown was remembered in a Celebration of Life service at Williamsport High School on Saturday. Several football greats attended the ceremony. Former Penn State legend Blair Thomas, current New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll, and Current Dallas Cowboy running back Ezekiel Elliott were just some of the attendees at the event to pay their respects to Brown.

MAN CHARGED WITH ASSAULT AFTER BAR FIGHT

A local bar fight means one Williamsport man will now face the charges after he waived his preliminary hearing.  According to the Sun Gazette, 50 year old Otis Anderson allegedly struck 71 year old Frank Scarfo in the head with a glass mug at a West Fourth Street bar on May 7th at about 11:30pm. Anderson was charged with aggravated assault and harassment charges and initially jailed but he was released on bail.  Scarfo was treated for his injuries at UPMC Williamsport.

WILKES-BARRE MAN ARRESTED IN MONTOURSVILLE

Police have arrested a Wilkes Barre man after they searched his vehicle and came up with heroin, methamphetamine, and firearms May 24th  in Montoursville.  According to North Central PA.com 30 year old Tyrea O. Golden, was stopped by police on N. Montour Street and ran from the scene when officers found narcotics in his pocket.  Golden was later apprehended and taken into custody and charged with numerous misdemeanors and traffic offenses along with the felony drug and gun charges.  He was denied bail, but will face Judge Gary Whiteman June 6th.

MASTRIANO VOLUNTEERS TO SIT FOR FBI

 Pennsylvania’s Republican nominee for governor has voluntarily offered to sit for an interview again with the committee investigation the January 6th attack on the US Capitol.  According to KDKA, Doug Mastriano, a retired Army Colonel had met with the FBI last year and was cleared for his alleged involvement the day of the insurrection.  The committee asked Mastirano’s lawyer for documents through a subpoena in February which lawmakers say they need as they gather as much testimony and evidence as possible before Public hearings begin this week.

NEW DEAN OF NURSING AT PENN COLLEGE

The Pennsylvania College of Technology has promoted one of its assistant deans to the top position. Valerie A. Myers, was appointed to succeed Sandra L. Richmond, who is returning to the teaching ranks at the school. Myers has been a nurse, educator and administrator for 14 years and has spent the last four as the Assistant Dean of Nursing. Myers begins her new duties as Dean of Nursing and Health Sciences on July 1st.
