STRUCTURE FIRE IN AVIS
Twelve fire departments from Clinton and Lycoming Counties responded to a structure fire Friday morning in Avis at the corner of East Highland and Washington Streets. The state police fire marshal told the Sun Gazette the fire was allegedly caused by a kerosene heater in a garage owned by Paul Corson. Witnesses say there was an explosion before the fire that woke neighbors about 6am Friday. Corson was transported to Geisinger Medical Center in Jersey Shore and hospitalized for minor burns and smoke inhalation. Sections of Brady and Washington streets from East Highland to Central Avenue were closed Frida as fire crews cleared the scene and extinguished the last of the fire.
TROUT RUN ACCIDENT VICTIM UPDATE
There is an update about the driver of a vehicle who was airlifted after an accident earlier this month on Route 14 near Trout Run. According to the Sun Gazette, a nursing supervisor at Geisinger Medical Center said 21 year old Hunter Sanabria of Burlington was reported in fair condition at the start of the weekend. According to State Police, Sanabria drifted into the southbound lane of Route 14 in the afternoon of October 11th causing a collision with a cement mixer which flipped on its side. Sanabria was extracted from his vehicle and flown to Geisinger with critical injuries. The driver of the cement mixer suffered minor injuries.
SENATOR YAW CONSIDERS ENVIRONMENTAL PARTNERSHIP
Senator Gene Yaw of Loyalsock Township is discussing initiatives with the Senate Environmental Resources and Energy Committee about the state joining with the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative or RGGI. Yaw says the natural gas partnership with New York and New Jersey isn’t friendly between the states and may not be in the best interest of Pennsylvania. According to a press release, discussion with states like Ohio and West Virginia make more sense since we have more in common as far as being similar gas producing states. Yaw said he could support a gas severance tax that would benefit municipalities.
VOLUNTEERS REPEL OFF WILLIAMSPORT BUILDING
A repelling fundraiser for the YMCA, YWCA and the Willliamsport Area School District Education Foundation this weekend generated at least 60 thousand dollars. According to the Sun Gazette, the Second Annual rappelling event “Over the Edge” drew 60 participants who each raised at least 1000 for the charity of their choice. Volunteers then repelled from the top of the William Hepburn Apartment building Saturday, amid good weather.
WOMAN BURGLARIZES HOME OF PERSON SHE HELPED
A woman will be sentenced in Lycoming County Court after being found guilty for burglarizing the home of a sick woman she was helping. According to the Sun Gazette, 51 year old Heidi White of Lamar and another person who plead guilty to related crimes this summer, assisted Ethel Starr of Petersburg Road in Washington Township when she fell ill on November 16th. According to court records, once Starr was hospitalized. White returned to the home to retrieve items the woman had forgotten and allegedly searched for jewelry and other items, committing a crime of opportunity. Whites sentencing hearing is December 9th.
MAN TAKES CHILD AFTER HITTING MOM WITH CAR
A Sunday night accident led to a man being jailed for child endangerment and other charges. According to State police, 36 year old Noah Vitrano hit a woman who was holding a 15 month old child in their driveway on the 500 block of Super Drive in Upper Mahanoy Township. According to WKOK, Vitrano took the child with him when he fled the scene and went to a local gas station where he unsuccessfully tried to give the child to someone there – then went to another store and gave the baby to an employee. Police caught up with Vitrano a short time later and he was arrested. Vitrano is in Northumberland County Prison charged with aggravated assault, DUI and child endangerment awaiting arraignment today.
PENN COLLEGE TUITION FREEZE POSSIBLE
Some students at Penn College will get a chance to freeze their tuition rates as part of a new program for students committing to complete their degree in 4 years. According to officials from Penn College The Momentum Incentive Program enables students to start in Fall 2020 and is open to first-time, full-time bachelor degree students who enroll by May 1, 2020. In order to freeze their tuition for all four years they must complete at least 30 credits each academic year and maintain a grade point average of at least a 3.0.
DETOUR WILL CHANGE DURING NORTHUMBERLAND PARADE
PennDOT will change the detours in place for the Northumberland Halloween parade that is coming up on Wednesday which will form in King Street Park at 6pm, and step off at 7pm. Authorities from Northumberland Borough say marchers and floats can access to the park from the open section of Front Street. PennDOT says the Route 11 south detour will temporarily be redirected by police starting at 5:45pm Wednesday onto Hanover Street, then to Seventh Street, and down to Duke Street.
LOCAL POLITICAL FORUMS TUESDAY IN WILLIAMSPORT
The second of 2 local political forums will take place tomorrow in downtown Williamsport at the Trade & Transit II center 144 West 3rd street. The forum hosted by the Williamsport Sun Gazette and Backyard Broadcasting will feature back to back sessions with city council candidates taking the stage at 6:30 p.m. and mayoral candidates at 7:45 p.m. Doors will open at 6 p.m. The evening will be moderated by Jason Fink, president of the Williamsport/Lycoming Chamber of Commerce.
